Cincinnati Reds’ Amir Garrett gets 7-game suspension for ‘inciting’ incident with Cubs

Cincinnati Reds reliever Amir Garrett has been suspended seven games and fined an undisclosed amount of money for “inciting” a benches-clearing incident with the Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon, Major League Baseball announced Tuesday.

Garrett is appealing his suspension and will be eligible to continue playing until the process is completed. Cubs shortstop Javier Baez, who had to be restrained on the field when the benches cleared, was also fined an undisclosed amount of money for his actions in the incident.

Garrett, 29, pounded his chest, screamed and took several steps in the direction of Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo after striking him out in the top of the eighth inning.

The Cubs took issue with the taunting and, led by Baez, confronted Garrett on the field. No punches were thrown and order was restored, but MLB is cracking down on these kinds of inciting incidents, especially as it violates COVID-19 restrictions.

Baez ought to have been suspended too, though - he jumped the dugout railing and took steps towards Garrett motioning for a fight. Garrett is an ***hole and deserves what he got, but if MLB really wants to crack down on this, they need to go after both parties when something like this happens. Otherwise you're just giving teams free reign to storm the field whenever an opponent does any little thing that sets them off, because why not? Other dude's just going to get suspended anyway.

Everyone wants the players to be able to “show” their emotions. We are getting many lessons on why all this stuff is a problem. Can we just go back to everyone playing the game and not showing up the opposition? And can we get rid of inter league play and the DH while we are at it?

It’s all starting to feel like every play is a touchdown celebration

Didn't this exact same thing happen a couple years ago? Garrett, Rizzo, same plot, same cast?

Yes, Garrett and Rizzo have a past. No suspensions back then I recall.

Look, Garrett is an ass but 7 games? For not throwing a punch? When Jose Alvarado got 3 games for the same kind of posturing? This is ridiculously disproportionate and inconsistent with all other punishments doled out so far.

LOL, yea, that's why.

there seems to be an effort to crack down on very specific plays - that is, dance and gesticulate all you want and celebrate and so forth, but directly point at and call out an opposing player, and it's going to cost you bigtime.

Garrett's track record may play a role here. I believe they may still have discussions with previously-suspended players to lay out the parameters. if someone thumbs their nose at that - well, clearly a longer "timeout" is required.

Put me down with #4. This is a substantial escalation in penalty. We're used to guys getting 3 days reduced to 2 or even 2 reduced to 1 for hitting guys under warning, charging the mound, etc. 7 games for being an ass is gonna have a lot of AAA players in the majors real quick. Castellanos got only 2 games for flexing right in the pitcher's face. (Granted, as a reliever, a 7-game suspension is more like 2-3 games he would have actually played in but that would be true as well if it was a bench player.) Wasn't it 10 games for Alomar spitting at an ump? Odor originally got 8 games for punching Bautista, reduced to 7.

I don't mind an overall escalation in penalty. If this is gonna be 7 and a punch is 14, I'm fine with that. But I'd have thought that sort of thing would be announced. Is this MLB trying to crack down on a "team culture" thing (first Castellanos, now this)?

It seems relevant to both the current incident and to punishment that Garrett has run into an opposing dugout before, throwing punches. Does the league just ignore that, once he served whatever punishment he got then?

Speaking as a Reds fan, I bet Garrett is really easy to dislike if you are an opposing player. Quite a ############. Or maybe a ###########.

I love him when he's locating that slider though.

The 8 and 9-man revolving door bullpens have already introduced that "feature" to Major League Baseball.

Why are teams allowed to replace suspended players? I think the team should just play a man down for a week.

I've always thought this, snapper. It should cost the team to have a player suspended. Of course, then, they'd need to get more rigorous about how it's applied.

I thought teams couldn't replace suspended players except for PED suspensions.
