Cleveland Guardians settle lawsuit with local roller derby team over rights to name

Officially, the Cleveland baseball team will become the “Guardians” on Friday.

Cleveland will have two teams called the Guardians.

The Major League Baseball franchise and a local roller derby club have reached a resolution in a lawsuit filed over the use of the name Guardians, allowing both to continue using it.

The sides on Tuesday jointly announced an “amicable resolution,” an agreement that permits the Indians to continue their changeover to Guardians—a switch that was delayed due to the legal matter and isn’t completely finished.

No other terms of the agreement were disclosed.

Any guesses on how many $$$ an "amicable resolution" cost?

More than a steak dinner, less than a house.

I saw an estimation talk once that recommended taking the harmonic mean of "clearly too little" and "clearly too much"

So using that approach:
Clearly too little: 1 hour of lawyer time, $1000
Clearly too much: 1 nice house, $1M

sqrt(1e3*1e6)=$31,622

I'll round up and guess $50K.

I'll take the over.

I expect all sportswriters and broadcasters to refer to them as the "baseball Guardians" now, to avoid confusion. Like the Cardinals before the NFL team moved to Phoenix, or the Giants before SF.

I agree, but probably closer to $50k than $1m

If we're talking about Cleveland, $50k IS the price of a nice house.

Cleveland Baseball Guardians actually sounds somewhat noble. Go for it.

Were they ever the baseball Giants? Not something I recall hearing, though granted they'd gone a few years earlier. But football Giants I heard lots while growing up.

You ain't kidding. After she passed 5 years ago, we couldn't sell my sister's very nice (great bones, you'd want to re-do the kitchen) 3 BR house for more than about $35,000. What are rents in Cleveland, $200/month?

EDIT: In raw dollars, it was what she had paid for it 20 years earlier. So even without the GFC, I'm not sure it would have gone for more than $150,000.

Honestly, the baseball team should have just offered to fund the roller derby league for x number of years

What part of Cleveland, Walt?

Don't know, before my time. I think Football Giants was kept alive for years by Chris Berman. When I lived in St. Louis in the 70s when they had two Cardinals the football team was usually referred to as the "Big Red" in newspaper headlines. Cardinals referred to the baseball team by default.

[3] That’s the geometric mean. The harmonic mean is the reciprocal of the mean of reciprocals. The harmonic mean of 1000 and 1000000 is 1998. Harmonic mean is useful for things like resistors in parallel, where you sum reciprocals- a 1000 ohm and 1000000 ohm resistor in parallel provides the same resistance as two 1998 ohm resistors.

It's also good for Win Shares rankings according to Bill James.

14 -- oops, thanks! I meant geometric mean.

as my daughter pointed out: they're keeping the domain name right?

ANd given that both teams have agreed to joint ownership, then what happens when the Rollerball team starts selling Guardians shirts that look quite like the baseball team?

And even though most RB teams don't wear caps, this one does. And it suprisingly looks like a baseball cap. Hmmmm

I’m sure the settlement covers such things. The roller derby team already sells merch and their logo/colors look nothing like the baseball club.

The Guardians are off to a smashing start.

I mean, not really. They in theory had some swag; there's no evidence that anyone other than people on the team actually bought it. I assume some people will buy it now for the kitsch value.
