Colorado School of Mines Talk – Bauer Outage

Trevor Bauer, and his father, Warren, took a trip to Golden, Colorado to meet with the Colorado School of Mines Sports Analytics Club. In this presentation, they discuss the future of analytics in baseball, how information has changed the game we love, and what they are doing to move the game forward

I misread that headline as “Colorado School of Mimes Talk” and thought boy, that’s kind of a mixed message there.

I'm not sure I can stomach an hour-long Trevor Bauer powerpoint presentation, but I suspect this might actually be pretty interesting to see how pitchers really do approach all this data.

Looks like a great idea, good for Bauer for doing it. Now we can sit back and watch him get savaged for it.

What is a school of mines?

What is a school of mines?

A really good engineering (mostly) school.

My son is a sophomore there, so I am honor-bound to say that it is a GREAT engineering school.

I misread the headline as "Bauer Outrage" and was not particularly surprised.

Speaking as an (ex)geologist, a superb geology program too.

Bauer has had a show on MLB Radio, the few times I've heard it it was really good. Very in depth, interesting stuff.

The Colorado School of Mines hosts an excellent Short Course on micro tunneling issues.

Nah. More fun to sit back and watch uptight mostly-righties like yourself whine about how Bauer gets talked about here when he says stupid shitt on social media or in public.

That said, famous/semi-famous people talking to students about educational stuff, especially when there is a high relatablity factor, is very often a good thing, so this probably was just that for the Colorado School of Mines Sports Analytics Club.

In the wake of the Felipe Vazquez thing, I'm surprised MLB is allowing players to talk to miners.

My wife's cousin attended the School of Mines on a softball scholarship. Very good education.

This was an excellent joke.

Think of it as the mining equivalent of an ag school. In my college days, the most-liked guy in the group I hung with got yanked out after sophomore year by his dad and basically forced to go to CSM cuz dad thought he was just f'ing around -- which wasn't exactly an incorrect impression.

Short Course on micro tunneling issues

Is that a pun, or something they actually offer? I don't know enough about mining to tell.

1 - they were a big customer of the software company I used to work for and for 14 years I read it as “mimes” every single freakin time.

Knowing Trevors reputation I misread it as Colorado School of Mines talk - Bauer Outrage.

OK, so late in the talk, without naming names, we get a review of Bauer's accusations about Cole.
   22. Esoteric Posted: November 22, 2019 at 07:34 AM (#5903096)
Can I get a time-stamp on that? I don't have the time to sit through an hour-long lecture right now.
   23. Nasty Nate Posted: November 22, 2019 at 07:59 AM (#5903098)
Followed by his accusations about coal

Not sure, but I think their motto is "A mine is a terrible thing to waste."
   25. SoSH U at work Posted: November 22, 2019 at 10:29 AM (#5903129)
Nicely done Nate.

   26. Mayor Blomberg Posted: November 22, 2019 at 12:26 PM (#5903163)
#22 -- It's all about spin rates, pick it up 50:00 right after no manager challenges a pitcher with "sticky stuff" on his glove or uniform because a lof of his own staff is doing it. Higher spin rate keeps the ball up longer.

No, it's a real thing. "Short course" is a reference to a series of seminars and talks. Micro tunneling does not refer to the length of the tunnel, but its circumference; the tunnel is dug with the use of a remotely operated micro tunneling machine. It allows you to tunnel under roads without having to close them down to do open pit tunneling, and to go under bodies of water without having to put in temporary dams. I took a walk through one under the Ala Wai canal in Honolulu while it was being built by one of my clients.
