Cristian Javier extension: Astros ink five-year deal, worth reported $64 million, with World Series hero

The defending World Series champions have signed a core player to a long-term extension. The Houston Astros have inked righty Cristian Javier to a five-year contract, the team announced Friday. It is worth $64 million and includes a $2 million signing bonus, reports the Houston Chronicle. The five-year deal buys out Javier’s three arbitration years and two free agent years.

“Cristian is an outstanding pitcher, so we are really excited about signing him to a long-term deal,” Astros GM Dana Brown said in a statement. “We felt that he is the perfect candidate for this type of deal as a core piece of our rotation. This is in line with our vision to try to lock players up to sustain our success both now and in the future.”

Wow. Over 300 innings, mostly as a SP and he's got a BABIP against of 224. That's incredible. 300 innings is still a small sample but there's probably some signal there.

I don't know who to comp him to moneywise. He was mostly SP in 2020, mostly RP in 2021, started 2022 as a swingman/6th starter but performed so well they didn't dare take him out of the rotation even when everybody was healthy.

Jose Berrios -- got $10 M for his first 2 arb years then signed for 7/$131 (total $20 M for his 3 arb years plus however you want to partial out his $5 M signing bonus).

Bieber got $6/$10 for his first 2 arb years. deGrom's 3 arb and first 2 FA years cost $80 M so (shocking) they aren't paying him like he's deGrom. Strider got $75 M for 3 arb years + 1 FA year with a $22 M option ($5 buyout). This is certainly cheaper than that one.

Anyway, seems fine for both sides. I'm not sure where the arbitrator would put him but 6/10/14 in are can't be ruled ruled out, l3aving 2/$34 for the FA years. I certainly don't think the Astros can complain that they got him this much cheaper than Strider while Javier of course now has a big risk-free payday under his belt.

This seems like a good deal for Houston given Javier's quality so far. Its not Javier's fault he was used as mostly RP in 2021.

Sure, but arbitrators take usage into account. A swingman is not a full-time SP. Obviously not as good as Javier but Ryan Yarbrough got just $6.2 M for his first two arb years then got non-tendered and signed for $3 for 23. The Rays signed Springs on a 2+2 for $31 M. Stripling has been in and out of the rotation over the years and he got about $11 M over 4 arb years and now 2/$25. It's moot, the Astros are clearly paying him like a starter.

this article (among others) suggests that BaBIP rate for pitchers almost never stabilizes.
