Crowd-seeking Rays come up with win-win-win free ticket plan

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — The Tampa Bay Rays are offering fans a win-win-win-win proposition.

Trying to draw bigger crowds to barren Tropicana Field, the Rays came up with a crowd-pleasing ticket plan Wednesday.

The ``Win Pack” lets a fan pick any four regular-season Rays game to attend for a total of $99. If the Rays win all four, the fan gets a voucher redeemable for a free ticket to another game.

The Veecks cannot say that they are impressed by this level of showmanship…..

That's hypothetically an interesting counter-incentive for the team. They could conceivably want to lose a game to avoid giving away free tickets.

Realistically, that's not going to happen - even a free ticket is still profitable for the team on parking/food/merch, it's not going to cannibalize any sellouts, there's not going to be sufficiently many free tickets riding on any one particular game to matter, and lastly it's hard to see anyone actually giving a tank order to the on-field personnel. But the possibility did come to mind as speculation.

If nothing else, it should boost attendance for the Orioles visits.

Is $25 a seat a good deal for the Rays? I'd have imagined you could do a lot better for a team that only draws 10,000 fans per game.

They'll likely come out ahead if the ticket holder buys anything at that 5th game.

If the Rays are as good as last year, then the odds of them winning all 4 is .593^4, or about 12%.

If $24.75 is market price for the tickets, they are giving away about 3 bucks. Selling 4/99 with a chance for a free ticket is equivalent to selling for 4/96 with no gimmicks. As far as price discounts to increase woeful attendance this isn't much of an effort.

Now fans can increase their odds by not selecting a league average mix of opponents. They could go to 4 Oriole-Rays games. But there's a downside to that strategy - the fan that suffers through 4 Oriole games may wind up having to watch a fifth.

I was going to say they are probably better at home than on the road, but they were exactly 48-33 in both last year. That probably doesn't happen very often.

I agree that if the Rays did a promotion that said, "Instead of 4/99, get 4/96!" there would be approximately zero extra tickets sold. But this way will probably get some extra sales. That's what marketing is about, isn't it?

Except they're not. That assumes that the person buying 4 and getting one for free 12% of the time, would buy the 5th the other 88% of the time. And that ignores that for the Rays, who are never sold out and thus no opportunity cost, the marginal revenue from giving away a free ticket is far higher than the marginal cost to service that free customer.
