Cubs combine to throw record-tying no-hitter

A night that started with a home run blast in the first inning turned into history on the mound at Dodger Stadium. Chicago starter Zach Davies set the tone with six spotless innings, followed by Ryan Tepera, Andrew Chafin and Craig Kimbrel for the Cubs’ first combined no-hitter in franchise history.

The offense continued to flash its home run power in the 4-0 victory through long balls from Javier Báez and Willson Contreras, but Chicago’s pitching was the main star under the Strawberry Moon that cascaded over Chavez Ravine.

The effort marked the seventh no-hitter of 2021, which ties the Modern Era (since 1900) AL/NL mark also set in 1990, 1991, 2012 and 2015. It was the 17th no-hitter in Cubs history, the most recent one coming from Alec Mills last season against the Brewers.

All three Cubs relievers didn't know there were no hits when they pitched.

I wonder if there's ever been a combined cycle, where one guy got a single, double and triple, then left the game, and his replacement in the lineup hit a homer.

I'm guessing no one ever paid attention to such a thing, because there's no drama in it.

There was hardly any drama in this.

If there is anything that destroys the balance in the game more than anything else, it's 1-inning relievers. Craig Kimbrel has electric stuff, but it's based on the fact that he need never throw more than a maximum of 40 pitches in an evening.

IF Zach Davies had thrown 6 innings and say, Chafin had thrown 3 innings, that might have had some drama.

Couldn't see where the third basemen was playing, but notable that NONE of the Dodgers tried to bunt for a base hit over the last 2 innings, though I assume they were shifting, for example, on Cody Bellinger.

It didn't seem like something to particularly celebrate. And by the end of the year baseball may DOUBLE the old record, at the current pace.

In addition to the other reasons why this wasn't very exciting, they also walked 8 batters.

For kicks, I skimmed through Kimbrel's career gamelogs. His career high in pitches appears to be 39, and he broke 35 about five times.

Right now about 2/3rds of the way through 2 mlb games today the non pitchers are a combined 9-69. That is just awful. No Degrom in the mix today, but some other journeyman has a no no through 5.

Yep, current pitcher usage is just odd. Jon Gray strikes out 10 in 5 innings, is on 83 pitches ... out he comes. Corbin Burnes gives up 1 in 6 innings, allowed to get to the herculean 94 pitches, pulled. At least we have the "satisfaction" that the Brewers reliever promptly gave up 3 to turn a 1-0 into a 4-0.

Davies last night was never gonna finish that game (5 walks, lots of pitches). He could have gone one more probably but there was really no reason to hold off on pulling him.

#7 Looks like the way 100 pitch limits are being done these days is that generally speaking the pitcher doesn't start the inning if it's moderately likely that completing the inning will take him over 100.

Jon Gray was making his first start after coming off the IL, which is why the Rockies were extra careful with him
