Cubs, Drew Smyly near deal for 2023 season, sources say

The Chicago Cubs are closing in on an agreement with left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN on Sunday.

Smyly, 33, made 22 starts last season for Chicago, pitching well in the second half after dealing with an oblique strain in late May. For the season, he was 7-8 with a 3.47 ERA, which included a 0.90 ERA over five stellar starts in August.

The nine-year veteran will rejoin a rotation that includes Marcus Stroman, newcomer Jameson Taillon and youngster Justin Steele. The Cubs also have Keegan Thompson and Adrian Sampson available to start along with holdover Kyle Hendricks, who is recovering from a shoulder ailment.

One more pitcher signing than I was expecting, maybe this means they don't expect Hendricks to be ready (or any good). I'm also surprised Smyly hasn't drawn interest from some better teams -- it's only 260 innings but 2020-22 he's got a 107 ERA+ with a solid K rate. He'd make a solid 3, good 4 on a contender. The Cubs at this point are closing in on 6th playoff spot contender themselves and, given it's the NLC, could take the division with some luck.

Huh ... somewhere along the way the Cubs made what might be the best bargain signing of the entire offseason. The Cubs grabbed Brad Boxberger for 1/$2.8 with a mutual option. Sure, who cares? Not even me really. But 2020-22, Boxberger has 147 innings of relief with a 132 ERA+. This offseason guys like that are getting 2/$15 easy, those numbers might even get you to $9 AAV. Is he hurt or something? (Did a web search, nothing obvious showed up.)

I came across this trying to figure out who will get bumped from the 40-man. They were at 39 before Dansby. There are simultaneously a number of guys you probably won't miss but nobody you really want to get rid of.

Any word on the dollars?

2/19, so he turned down 1/10 and got 2/19. Good for both sides
