Cubs expected to hire Mike Napoli — David Ross’ former teammate — as quality assurance coach

David Ross will not only be managing former teammates with the Cubs in 2020, but he’ll be coaching alongside one, too.

The Cubs are expected to add former MLB catcher Mike Napoli to Ross’ coaching staff, per multiple reports. Napoli will assume the title of quality assurance coach, vacated by Chris Denorfia, who held the position for one season.

Napoli played in parts of 12 big-league seasons from 2006-17 with the Angels, Rangers, Red Sox and Indians. He won the 2013 World Series with Boston — alongside Ross and Cubs starter Jon Lester — and was also a key figure with the 2016 Indians, whom the Cubs defeated in the World Series. He finished his career with a .246/.346/.475 slash line with 267 home runs.

Still trying to figure out what, exactly, a “quality assurance coach” is meant to do…..

Assure quality. Duh, it's right there in the job title.

‘Assurance??’ When you do that, you make an ass out of you and Rance Mulliniks!

Denorfia played with Ross on the '06 Reds. So Ross has swapped out one former teammate for another.

it's makin me feel old that almost every ballplayer is now youngern me - including some managers and coaches

i told this to my mama and she said - just wait until you look at the rookies, think they're HOTTTTTTT and you suddenly realize you old enough to be they mama. even worse when the managers young enough to be your son.

It's up there with "continuous improvement." I mean, what if we're already doing it really well? Maybe even better than anybody else? And continuous -- not even a single day, a single second, to rest on our laurels? Even weekends?

Walt, the end of that post was no better than the beginning. Shame on you.

Here's just how much the game has changed. In decades past, a guy like Napoli, who could still hit a little, would get a job on an NL team for a few years as an inveterate pinch hitter, a la Rusty Staub. That role has been extinct for at least 2 decades now.

Jason Giambi had that job semi-recently.

Yeah, but for the Rockies. They're at least a decade behind.

In 2009, Greg Norton had 97 plate appearances with the Braves, 89 of which were as a pinch hitter. He was horrendous, of course.

Walt, the end of that post was no better than the beginning.

I have been in my decline phase since I was 18.

In 2018, Tommy LaStella had 90 PA as a PH for the Cubs.** He even hit 312/398/416. Silly Angels gave him a full-time job!

**And 102 non-PH PAs.
