Curt Schilling joins Outkick, Clay Travis welcomes him by slamming ‘pathetic losers at ESPN’

Former Major League Baseball pitcher and ESPN analyst turned-far-right political pundit Curt Schilling is joining Outkick.

Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports broke the news Tuesday morning, reporting that Schilling will launch a baseball show for the conservative-leaning outlet founded by Clay Travis.

“I’m excited to be teaming with a group of motivated, focused people, who are intent on making OutKick a leader and most excited to talk baseball, and only baseball,” Schilling said in a statement to FOS. “After meeting the team and the opportunity to get back to the sport I love and focus only on that was too appealing to pass up.”

According to the announcement, The Curt Schilling Baseball Show will air every Tuesday and Friday during Spring Training, and the new video podcast for Outkick is expected to continue throughout the entire 2023 MLB season.

If you want to hear what sports fans really think without fear of woke consequences
It seems like that will come back to haunt them if Schilling sues after he gets fired for praising a rapist or saying the N word. If that's grounds for firing from "Outkick," that is.

You mean I might finally be able to hear criticism of athletes that take the knee? It's about time!

I might finally hear misinformed support for bans on transgender athletes out of a fake concern for the integrity of women's sports while also finally getting some discussion about how female athletes don't deserve to be paid as much as male athletes? Praise Jesus!

And will we finally have someone unafraid to tell LeBron James to shut up and play basketball? Because that has been sorely missing from American civic discourse.

Woke sports are joke sports amirite?

If Schilling could talk only baseball he would be in the Hall of Fame.

It's a curious name choice. I mean in a world with Outsports, Outloud Sports, Out For Sport, Out On The Fields and so on it was clearly an inspired idea to nestle in as close to those properties as possible and choose the name Outkick, right? Build off their established names, steal some audience? Genius. I might suggest further research might have been in order.

I can't stand EITHER and wish there was a reasonable middle ground.

My grandparents lived out the Eisenhower-era assumptions of a white-collar job, 2.5 kids, and a nice suburban house. But, of course, that whole social system depended upon women and non-white men taking subordinate jobs only. It's gone forever and rightly so.

I've lived in major cities (Chicago, D.C.) and in flyover country. In the former, there's much more of a post-racial, "people are people" vibe. In the latter, there's significant social pressure for young white men to live up to the traditional template but a complete lack of perspective on why it's not easy to do so any longer. That's where the white victimhood cult arises.

i read something bout how something like half of young White males got no gf, got no job, and 1 of 5 gen Z identify as queer. especially females. i also read how young males get their ideas of how to have sex with a female from pr0n and it is pretty violent and degrading to females and am not surprised all them young guys all incels. you got no job and no hope then you got no woman. they they think they victims. good Lord

i also read that the majority of people under 21 who want to transition are female to male. the fascists/nazis are all hating on gays and queer people and trans people and banning abortion thinking they can force females back into eisenhower age type subordinate females without no hope of nothing. you know that single females Back Then couldn't have a checking account with some male as a cosigner. he could empty her account any time he felt like it.

i know what you mean Ardo, but somehow, anti-"woke" means banning posters of george washington carver in Black elementary sloolz because it's too Shocking for children or some such horse poop. agree to disagree ain't no option in this country no mo.

Yeah, I have to admit that's the first thing I thought of when I heard the name "OutKick." OK great, maybe Schilling's finally comfortable with himself, let's give him some sympathy. But no, just a coincidence.

Kind of like how "Pride Fighting" didn't turn out to be what I thought it was. (And it looks like the name is gone now.)

I'd heard promos for "Outkick the Coverage", which I assumed was just a random cute sports term (like "triple short of the cycle"). Shortening it to "Outkick" changes it to something very different. To me that sounds like they are striving to outdo their competition in being a$$hats.

Yes, Clay Travis shortened the name a few years ago, shortly before hiring noted white racist/misogynistic/Islamophobic/anti-Martian/fascist/Nazi Jason Whitlock.

"Outkick the Coverage" is also a term used to describe guys and gals who date or marry someone way out of their league.

   23. Barry`s_Lazy_Boy Posted: February 24, 2023 at 03:56 PM (#6118508)
Outkick the Coverage as a term originally meant that the kicker kicked the ball too far or too low, and the returning team got a good return before the defenders could be there. Outkicking the coverage was a bad thing.

Sometime this millennium, it became slang for dating or marrying someone much more attractive than you. Which I guess they meant as a good thing, but it basically used the opposite meaning of the original term.

Travis originally went under Outkick the Coverage. Then shortened it.

Now Outkick just means "I'm a major ####### douche bag."

For a site I was given to believe was about sports, it has an awful lot of items that appear to be about online influencers, hot wives of famous people, and various other “celebrities” that are celebrities almost if not solely for being attractive and lending themselves to various states of undress.

Hey, I get it…. But who exactly is the market for it? People at work or in a public area worried about someone seeing them looking at xxx sites on their phone?
   25. gehrig97 Posted: February 24, 2023 at 04:32 PM (#6118518)
I ran a small baseball page on Facebook for a couple of years. Based on FB metrics, my audience (about 10,000) was overwhelming white, overwhelming male, and overwhelmingly over the age of 50 (which aligns for the most part with baseball's fan demographics). I shut the page down because it was just too toxic--not a single post went un-accosted by someone with an agenda (after a while, banning them was useless; it was like a MAGA Hydra).

Based on this purely anecdotal experience, I have a feeling Schilling will find his audience.

reminds me of the article that drew magary wrote about his own misogynistic past at deadspin.

funnily enough, that article very neatly ties into the subject of this one:
We didn’t post much about Barstool here in the past, just as we rarely post about former Deadspin editor and current After-Shave Rights Advocate Clay Travis, the reasoning being that both Travis and Portnoy are deeply shitty men who crave attention any way they can get it, usually by race-baiting or screaming BOOBS in a crowded theater. Don’t feed the trolls, etc. But as much as I’d like to ignore both men, there is the harsh truth that they are good, in a sense, at marshaling a very specific and damaging niche of the Internet for their own personal branding and enrichment. They are catering, quite effectively, not just to white dudes, but to the white dudes who feel, wrongly, as if the greater Internet has left them behind. And I know this breed of fella quite well because, in some ways, I am one.
[...]
I am not here to boast to you that I am a changed man. I’m not here to put my hand on my heart and declare the GMG elevators abuse-free, or scrawl ALLY across my chest in red letters. All I can tell you is that I’m not making sexist jokes here anymore. I’m not topping posts with the first Erin Andrews photo I can find. I’m not calling everything gay. And that’s not because I’ve been forbidden from it. I’m not screaming at Marchman to stet SLUT across articles. I just … I don’t wanna make those jokes anymore. They’re not funny. They’re not necessary. And they’re not true. I’m well aware that cultural sensitivity can sometimes careen into the realm of the absurd, but that does not mean I get to dismiss the very real hurt some posts can do.
[...]
yeah, maybe sites like Barstool and Outkick are flourishing in the age of Trump. But let me tell you something: There will be a reckoning. Maybe Clay Travis won’t pay professionally for his horseshit, but he’ll pay any time he’s got to look a woman in the eye. He’ll pay anytime someone on the street says to him, “Hey, I saw your tweet,” and he’s gotta worry about what they’re gonna say next. And he’ll pay at the gates of hell.

it's a really ####### good piece of writing.

I suppose the idea is that they're basically doing an online lad magazine with enough of a sports focus, which, hey, worked for Barstool. Just cobbling together enough of a male audience that boner pills, tacticool gear, and the like will place ads. I don't know that there's necessarily room for multiple Barstools, but there's probably a limitless enough supply of people who will churn out content for them that they don't have much overhead. You can probably run something like that stealing people's photos off Instagram, paying the people who make the bulk of your content in exposure (and probably paying the likes of Schilling less than one might think) and doing a bunch of SEO while pulling in whatever from advertising. Given how every form of media is apparently broken, it's probably as good a plan as any, dismally enough.

I can't stand EITHER and wish there was a reasonable middle ground.

You and me both. Even when you agree with 90% of "woke" sentiments, there's still too much of the "Who? Who doesn't want to wear the ribbon?" bullshit and a demand for 100% opinion conformity. Fortunately when you get to be a certain age, you become more able to ignore it.

My grandparents lived out the Eisenhower-era assumptions of a white-collar job, 2.5 kids, and a nice suburban house. But, of course, that whole social system depended upon women and non-white men taking subordinate jobs only. It's gone forever and rightly so.

Amen. If you didn't live through that era it's hard to convey just how all-pervasive that American caste system really was. But spend a week watching 1950's TV shows and you'll get a pretty good sense of it.

Right on all counts. Sad but all too true.

The last 10% is always the hardest, comrade.

I don't know that there's necessarily room for multiple Barstools

There are apparently about 20 different FB sites that do nothing but post pictures of Prince. Not links to recordings, not links to merchandise, just pics of Prince. I know this because FB insists on feeding at least 2 every day to me and they're coming from different accounts. I quite like Prince's music but I have no interest in pics of him. Since they occasionally also feature an attractive woman I guess they are better than the daily pic of David Gilmour (why FB, why?)

Oh well, as noted, all media is broken. We are entering some sort of post-media world and, even though as far as I know I invented the term, I have no idea what that even means. The only medium that seems to be growing is ... LPs. Maybe MLB should try distributing games via videodisc.
   33. Jay Seaver Posted: February 26, 2023 at 12:43 AM (#6118637)
Okay, maybe there isn't room for multiple Barstools that make money - I mean, heck, I'm mildly amazed that my movie review blog gets ~200 views a day but I doubt I could make back the $25 in domain name fees let alone pay myself any sort of fair wage for the time I spend on it. The internet's got infinite room for people with hobbies but good luck breaking even on it.

Wow that website is really . . . something else.

It always cracks me up that the people who love calling themselves "fearless" are afraid of so many aspects of today's society and culture. Like science and alt people.

It seems like that will come back to haunt them if Schilling sues after he gets fired for praising a rapist or saying the N word. If that's grounds for firing from "Outkick," that is.

Pretty sure that's cause for being *hired* at Outkick. Which has a remarkably small amount of sport content. Seems like they're trying to emulate current-era Deadspin & Co but from "the other side" or sometihng.
