David Ortiz says Red Sox sign stealing penalties were unfair: ‘It’s what everybody’s doing in the le

David Ortiz wasn’t happy with the punishment Major League Baseball handed down to the Red Sox for stealing signs in 2018.

Appearing on FOX with Kevin Burkhardt and Alex Rodriguez on Friday, Ortiz said he believed MLB’s decision to strip the Red Sox of a second-round draft pick and suspend video assistant J.T. Watkins was too harsh.

“They were searching trying to find out if anything that happened in Houston happened in Boston,” Ortiz said. “Basically, it wasn’t even close to a similar situation. What happened in Boston is what everybody’s doing in the league right now. I think the punishment was not fair, to be honest with you.”

In January, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred found that the Astros used a center-field video camera to relay signs to players during games in 2017 and punished them harshly, handing one-year suspensions to then-manager A.J. Hinch and then-general manager Jeff Luhnow, stripping four draft picks and fining Houston $5 million. This week, Manfred found little in the way of wrongdoing by the Red Sox but did determine that, at least on some occasions, Watkins broke MLB rules by using the video replay room to relay signs to players during game.

Taking a shovel and digging yourself into a hole, I see…..

I think it's entirely fair that they have punished every team that has been caught, including Boston.

Apparently Ortiz draws a distinction between everybody and banned steroids versus everybody and banned electronic sign stealing.

Feb 16, 2009
Associated Press

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- David Ortiz wants players who test positive for steroids to be suspended from baseball for a year instead of the current 50-game penalty.

Taking players to court, though, for cases involving use of the substances before players were subject to penalty is not the way to clean up the game, the Boston Red Sox designated hitter said Monday.

"I would suggest everybody get tested, not random, everybody," he said. "You go team by team. You test everybody three, four times a year and that's about it."

And if a player tests positive for steroids?

"Ban 'em for the whole year," the slugger said. [...]

"I think you clean up the game by the testing," Ortiz said Monday. "I know that if I test positive by using any kind of substance, I know that I'm going to disrespect my family, the game, the fans and everybody, and I don't want to be facing that situation.

"So what would I do? I won't use it, and I'm pretty sure that everybody is on the same page," he said.

He drew a distinction between the use of steroids through 2003, when it was not penalized, and the period since then when testing with penalties has been in effect.

Miguel Tejada pleaded guilty last Wednesday to lying to Congress about performance-enhancing drug use in baseball. Barry Bonds pleaded not guilty earlier to charges that he lied to a grand jury in 2003 when he said he never knowingly used steroids.

"All the drama, bringing that to court and acting like those [are] serious criminals, it doesn't look good for the game," Ortiz said. "It's not like something that is happening right now. Everybody that has been taken to court, it's because they did it in the past when it wasn't banned from the game."

Alex Rodriguez has said he used banned substances between 2001-03, when he was with the Texas Rangers.

Ortiz said that at that time, "I would say it was certainly low, the percentage that wasn't using it. Like he said in the interview [with ESPN], that was what was going around the league at the time. [emphasis added]

He doesn't, really. In what you quoted, he said everyone should be tested. In the interview on sign stealing he says the punishment is unfair because they only sought evidence on Boston despite every team doing something like what Boston was doing. Sounds like he thinks everyone should be tested in this case, too.

Whether there's any factual basis to his assertion that everyone is doing something like what Boston was doing is unknown, and I'm not going to consider it until I hear from someone outside the 617 area code on the matter.

Ortiz isn’t really doing anything to help his Hall case. I believe he called Fiers a rat or something that effect and now the whining about this and the PED cloud. Not to mention being a target of a hit, for what reason we will never know.

He’s always a been a marginal case - he should be doing all he can to move some neutrals into his camp.

So you're saying he's not helping his case because he said Fiers shouldn't have waited until after he got a ring and a new contract before saying he had a problem with the Astros' cheating; and that if Fiers had a problem with it he should have said something in the moment.

You're saying he's not helping his case because he said if MLB has a problem with what Boston was doing, then every team should be investigated for the same because every team is doing something similar.

You're saying he's not helping his case because of something MLB is adamant shouldn't be held against Ortiz, with which Ortiz unsurprisingly agrees.

You're saying he's not helping his case because he got shot while drinking at a bar.

I... I'm speechless.

To play devil's advocate, being outspoken on controversial issues is probably not a great tactic if you're trying to win public support. And not getting shot is always a good idea. I really think he blew it by getting shot. That was a terrible choice on his part.

I look back on all the days I didn't get shot in my life, and I don't regret not getting shot. Not even once. So yes, the fact that Ortiz decided to get shot does make me suspicious of him.

Ortiz’s unsupported claim that “everybody was doing it” is quite similar to what some Braves fans argued on behalf of Coppolella.

It's rarely the proverbial "good look" when adults try to invoke the "But MOOOOOMMMMMMM!!! All the other kids were doing it too! You're being SOOO unfair!" defense.

That's pretty clearly not what I was referring to, but you knew that.

He's probably right insofar as the Red Sox would get subjected to additional scrutiny after the Apple Watch hullabaloo.
