DAVIDOFF: Yankees facing a new Clint Frazier trade value reality

WFAN callers hardest hit.

In 69 major league games, Frazier, the top return piece in the trade that sent lefty reliever Andrew Miller from The Bronx to Cleveland, slashed .267/.317./489, slamming 12 home runs in 225 at-bats. He indeed played a critical role prior to the All-Star break, with several regular players on the injured list, yet he also did regress defensively and greatly upset both teammates and bosses by not making himself available to the media after a June 2 loss to the Red Sox in which he played terribly on defense and then refusing to apologize two days later for his lack of accountability. Following his demotion to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in June, he repeatedly expressed his unhappiness on social media with the Yankees’ decision.

Frazier’s personality issues, while detrimental, didn’t deter those surveyed as much as his problems with the glove. Regarding the former issue, “He might just need to get out of New York,” a second high-ranking official from a second non-pinstriped team said. However, the same official added, “There are questions about his defense. Can he be an everyday outfielder?

“He couldn’t be the centerpiece of a big deal,” the executive concluded. “But he could be a significant piece in a lesser deal.”

I don’t see the Yankees trading Frazier unless they get a good return. They need him for outfield depth, at least until Aaron Hicks returns from Tommy John surgery and proves himself still capable. Stanton should be the primary DH, which leaves LF as a battle between Frazier & Mike Tauchman.

I was always under the impression that Frazier was a CF? Or could at least play CF?

But I see he's only played a single game in CF... and dwar says he's not all that good at a corner spot either.

Was I mistaken or am I thinking of someone else?

You're thinking of Mike Trout. He plays CF.

Actually, I think I was thinking of Austin Meadows....

Clint was talked about as a prospect as maybe being acceptable in CF.

I think that ship has sailed....

I mean I guess, he's only played 18 games there though, and it's now like he lighting outfield corner defense on fire.

Upon looking further - he did primarily play CF in the minors.

Concussions are a #####. I’m starting to think my prediction that he’d be better than Judge will prove to be incorrect. Obviously it’s still pretty tight.

Jokes aside I think the Yankees are in a similar spot with Frazier that the Sox have been with JBJ over the years. He’s good enough to have around at a low price and just ride him for he what he is until he starts getting pricey then move on. His trade value ain’t great but he’s not so worthless to just punt.

Maybe you are thinking of Dustin Fowler? He played in same OF with Frazier at Scranton-WB in Yankee system. They are both from GA, both were drafted in 2013. Fowler was regarded as a better defensive player and athlete (well, until he ran into an electrical box at White Sox stadium)

No, you were thinking of Bradley Zimmer. They were in the Indians org at the same time, were similarly ranked as prospects, and they both have Z surnames. Zimmer is a good defensive CF.
   11. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: November 15, 2019 at 04:57 PM (#5901545)
No, Bradley Zimmer plays first for the Nats, pitches terribly for the Tigers and also eats raw moose scrotum on TV.
   12. PreservedFish Posted: November 15, 2019 at 05:13 PM (#5901549)
I was in an elevator once with Andrew Zimmern. That's the entirety of my story.
   13. Rally Posted: November 15, 2019 at 05:14 PM (#5901550)
No, you’re thinking of Don Zimmer. Surprising power for a little guy, had a great infield arm, and stuck around for a long time as a manager and coach.

[9] Pretty sure it was Dexter Fowler.
   15. Howie Menckel Posted: November 15, 2019 at 05:40 PM (#5901559)
the Yankees keep him around to keep NYC sports talk radio afloat.

almost all trade proposals by fans include Frazier and a "lower-tier pitching prospect" for somebody's in-his-prime All-Star. I hope he never leaves.
   16. Walt Davis Posted: November 16, 2019 at 07:58 AM (#5901600)
Maybe you were thinking of Walt "Clyde" Frazier ... in which case you might want to see a specialist about these memory problems you've been having.
   17. Brian Posted: November 16, 2019 at 06:25 PM (#5901713)
Frazier and Meadows went to rival high schools in GA. Sports Illustrated did a story prior to the Amateur draft on the two of them being such great prospects in the same area. I think Frazier went 7th (He went 5th) and Meadows 9th in that draft.
