Dee Gordon Changes Last Name to Honor His Mom, DeVona Strange, Who Was Killed

Seattle Mariners infielder and outfielder Dee Gordon told the team he wants to go by Dee Strange-Gordon going forward, per Greg Johns of MLB.com, in honor of his late mother DeVona Strange, who was killed when he was seven.

Strange was shot and killed by her boyfriend, Lynford Schultz, who served five years in prison for manslaughter.

Strange-Gordon told B/R’s Scott Miller in 2019 that Devaris Strange-Gordon is his legal name, but after a public address announcer in rookie ball badly mispronounced his full name, he asked to just be called Dee Gordon.

“She had this beautiful smile, man,” Strange-Gordon told Miller of his mom. “I thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. She was so sweet.”

How do you badly mispronounce "Strange-Gordon"? Strange is a common word and Gordon a common name. Did the PA announcer pronounce it like one word, Strangegordon? The only other thing I could think of is that Strange-Gordon uses an uncommon pronunciation for one of the two halves, but it doesn't sound like that from the article.

I missed that Bleacher Report had been picked up by CNN. That's not bad for a site that was widely panned when it first came it prominence.

I would guess they mispronounced Devaris.

Maybe (s)he was German and pronounced it "SHTRAHNG-uh-gordon".

It was spelled "Strange-Gordon" but they pronounced it "Throatwarbler-Mangrove"

Bad night for Swedish Chef to be the guest PA announcer.

A nice gesture on Gordon's part.

Yeah, I imagine "Dee Strange-Gordon" would sound like "The Strange Gordon" which is the worst Batman villain ever so after hearing Devaris ###### up he just said "make it Dee."

When I graduated college all 800 or so of us who were walking were named individually. After the ceremony my father told me he was really impressed that the guy reading the names never seemed to struggle. What he hadn't noticed is that they had told us at rehearsal the morning before to hand the paper with our name on it to the guy and if we had the slightest concern we should say our name as we wanted it pronounced. Worked like a charm.

Also, at least in the NHL, the players say their names in a video that gets distributed to the announcers and PA guys. Obviously I wouldn't expect that to happen in the low minors.

When he plays in Toronto they just call him Gord.

My daughter's high school soccer team had basically two full names in the starting lineup that weren't possible to mispronounce. I made up a pronunciation key that I would give to the PA person whenever we were on the road. When they made it to the state title game, the AD called me and asked me to email it to him to pass it along to the state guys.

Even with that, many of them still mispronounced a name or two.

And Dee just seems like the best damn dude.

Isn’t it the other way around? CNN was generally viewed favorably in its early days, and less so now?

Dee has had a great run in MLB. I wish him many more years.

I could see someone going "Strahn-guh" if they read it quickly and didn't intuitively parse it as a word.

Or the hyphen got left out on the PA guy's sheet. Or the PA just announced "Next batter: Strange Gordon"

According to b-r's often completely made-up nickname section, one of his nicknames is "Varis Strange" so maybe that was it -- or more likely Sean is a GoT nerd.

Dee is fun to watch and seems like a stand-up person and a good dude. We need more folks like him in the game.

It's pronounced "FRAHNK-un-STEEN"...!
