Deep Thoughts (and Spelling Mistakes) with Pete Rose Autographs

Western Hells High School RULZ!

Not all the notes are perfect. Some show signs of Rose correcting himself by writing over a letter or two. Some remain with spelling mistakes in tact. One such error reads, “It’s a round ball & a round bat & you got to it it square.”

While some may wince at such autograph errors, others may find a bit of humor in them. As Rose would likely freely admit, nobody’s perfect. In most marathon card signing sessions, players and personalities are simply scribbling their names in such a way you might be able to make out a letter or two. Rose is going way beyond the scribble and actually adding a note.

2011 Leaf Pete Rose Legacy Rose-isms Inscription List:

-30 Yr Old Body, 15 Yr Old Brain = Ball Player
-I was born on the day Lincoln was shot and the Titanic sank.
-Dad taught me to practice and practice more.
-With the money I’m making, I should be playing 2 positions.
-Never bet on baseball.
-It’s a round ball & a round bat & you got to hit it square.
-See the ball, hit the ball.
-I’d walk through hell in a gasoline suit to play.
-Winning 2/3s of the games usually wins a pennant.
-You win a hitting lesson with the hit king. (Note: Not part of regular print runs. Limited to one prize card.)

In tact, eh?

Speaking of baseball-related typos: Last week I picked up LOOK, I MADE A HAT, Stephen Sondheim's second volume of collected lyrics.* There's one song, "Ten Years Old," written for a 1960 telecast saluting the 1950s that's a veritable laundry list of 1950s-related pop culture names and catchphrases. Bobby Thomson's name appears in it and Sondheim ID's him as having hit "the shot heard 'round the world," but he spells it "Bobby Thompson."

* If you enjoyed Sondheim's first volume from last autumn, BTW, you'll love this one, too.

That's not a typo, that's a spelling mistake.

Fair enough.

I was born on the day Lincoln was shot and the Titanic sank.

Either the Civil War was more recent than I was taught, or the Titanic happened earlier than I was taught.

You really expect Pete Rose to know the proper usage of "day" vs. "date"?

And BTW, could April 15 be a crappier day?

I know, I'm not ragging on Rose, it's just kind of funny to imagine is all. "Mrs. Lincoln, aside from the sinking of the Titanic, how was the play?"

I guess taxes could be due that day......

had to look it up,

April 15th
1947 Jackie Robinson becomes first black player in the major leagues.
1783 Congress ratifies peace with Great Britain
1998 Pol Pot dies
1452 Leonardo da Vinci Born
1990 Emma Watson born

so not all bad.

I graduated from college when Emma Watson was exactly three weeks old. Do I feel really ancient.

April 15 was the day of the Roman festival of the Fordicidia.

Does anybody have any online links to hot da Vinci upskirt photos?

-Winning 2/3s of the games usually wins a pennant.

This would resonate better were it:

"-Losing 1/3 of the games usually wins a pennant."
