Denver Post: Carroll disappointed by Glove snub

Oh, Carroll
Don’t let them steal your Gold Glove away

“It’s disappointing. It would have been nice recognition because of how much I pride myself on defense,” Carroll said. “But it’s also good just to get mentioned.”

Big-league managers and coaches vote on the award, where name recognition often trumps actual performance. Carroll ranked above Hudson in zone rating - which quantifies how many balls a fielder reaches in his area - and committed 10 fewer errors.  Orlando Hudson, however, played 157 games at second base, compared to 109 for Carroll, who shared playing time in the final month with Kaz Matsui.

“It’s frustrating because they talk about how Hudson is on the highlights for diving plays every night. I don’t think that should be held against me,” said Carroll, aware that the Rockies are not frequently featured on ESPN after years of losing. “I credit our coaching staff for constantly putting us in the right position so we don’t have to make the spectacular play.”

Neil Sedaka? Did he write any songs about shortstops unworthy of high regard for their fielding?

In what universe does Orlando Hudson have "name recognition"? In what way did the huge national appeal of the DBacks lead to Hudson getting all the highlight time?

Nothing against Carroll who for all I know may have deserved the GG. It's the writer I'm griping about.

For me, guys who play just 109 games don't deserve the GG ... with the exception of Rafael Palmeiro of course.

Isn't Orlando Hudson the actor from "Caribbean Braindead Pirates Swinging at Slop"?

No, that's Orlando Bloom. Orlando Hudson is the actor who co-starred with Jackie Chan in the "Rush Hour" movies.

Wow. I just realized that I thought Chris Tucker's name was Orlando Something. So, ha.

Chris Tucker was the guy from the 7UP commercials.

No, Orlando Jones did the 7UP commercials.

Chris Tucker was in Rush Hour.

And Sonny Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson.

Yep, that's what I did. I was confusing Chris Tucker with Sonny Liston. My bad.

Well, I confused 2 Live Crew with Culture Club once.

Nobody seems to care about Jamey Carroll. I personally had no idea who he was except that he was a baseball player for the Rockies or possibly the Twins or Brewers or Astros or some other team in the middle of the country somewhere. Therefore, this thread has been a learning experience.
