DenverPost/Saunders: Rockies’ Ian Desmond facing big challeng playing center field at Coors Field

Where can you hide Ian Desmond?

Ian Desmond, a former shortstop and most recently the Rockies’ primary first baseman, is preparing for his next assignment: patrolling the wide-open spaces of Coors Field. Specifically, at age 33, Desmond has been pegged to play center field as the Rockies shift all-star Charlie Blackmon, 32, to left.

Also: another DP article quotes Bud Black saying Blackmon is moving to right, which makes sense. David Dahl is the incumbent in left.

I would imagine Tom Nawrocki would have some colourful ideas with what you could do with Ian Desmond.....

I take the missing 'e' in the BBTF headline as a 4th-dimensional chess level swipe at the Rockies' plan here.

Shades of Joe Pepitone, moving from first base to . . . centerfield!

Very few outfielders in their 30s playing every day in the bigs, even fewer playing cf at 33. Can't think of any. I imagine the lineup will change in a few weeks.

There's a YouTube video titled something like "Carl Yastrzemski hits two triples in Yankee Stadium," but it could just as easily have been titled "Why teams usually don't put their first baseman in center."

Not many with 99+ games in CF (Edmonds in 2006) at 33+ since 2006:

2006: Steve Finley 41, Kenny Lofton 39, Ken Griffey Jr 36, Jim Edmonds 36, Brady Clark 33, Mike Cameron 33
2007: Jim Edmonds 37, Mike Cameron 34, Ichiro Suzuki 33
2008: Jim Edmonds 38, Mike Cameron 35
2009: Mike Cameron 36, Torii Hunter 33
2011: Andres Torres 33, Marlon Byrd 33

2012: Andres Torres 34
2013: Coco Crisp 33
2014: Coco Crisp 34
2015: Angel Pagan 33
2017: Denard Span 33

Ian Desmond makes marginally more sense in center field than he does at first base. That's about the best thing I can say about this. Raimel Tapia isn't exactly a hot prospect, but he has the chance to not be terrible in center field, which makes him a lot better idea than Ian Desmond. So would the still-unsigned Carlos Gonzalez, for that matter, even though he's widely considered to be washed up but is at least younger than Ian Desmond.

I can't think of a worse possible position change in recent memory? Anybody have one that's worse?

At first I didn't know if you were referring to Ian Desmond to 1B, or Ian Desmond to CF.

If Desmond stinks in center, I assume he'll move to left and Dahl (if he's healthy) will move to center? Is there a point at which Desmond can actually play himself out of a lineup? I'd rather have Tapia with an OPS+ of 83 in center than Desmond w/the same OPS+. Tapia seems like the better fielder.

The Rockies still seem to have holes at catcher and depth. (I think they were replacement level or worse at catcher, 1st, and maybe LF in 2018.)

#6 is less of a track record than I would have thought. Now I feel even worse about this move.

Wil Myers, third baseman?

Tapia has good speed and bad instincts, and on the balance I agree with you that he's a better option than a guy with no experience at the position who also can't hit for ####.

On May 17 last year, he was hitting .167/.213/.340, and still ended up appearing in 160 games, so the answer appears to be no.

The Rockies still seem to have holes at catcher and depth. (I think they were replacement level or worse at catcher, 1st, and maybe LF in 2018.)

They've replaced the regular first baseman and left fielder from last season, so at least they've addressed those concerns somewhat.

Desmond did spend a season in center field three years ago, in his lone season in Texas. Bb-ref didn't like his defense then, and I don't reckon it's gotten any better.

Desmond's .269 xBA in 2018 was his highest in 5 years.

that said, center field? no

Whenever Lucas Duda's position switched from batter to fielder, that seemed to be a pretty bad mistake.

So, I have a question about the song "Camptown Races". When the verse goes, "Camptown ladies sing this song," to which song are they referring? Is it just the "Doo-Dah" and the bit that follows? Or are they referring to the song of which the lyrics themselves are a part, i.e. the Camptown ladies are singing the song "Camptown Races" about themselves, self-referentially?

Erstad moved from first to center (with time in left along the way) and won a Gold Glove - then moved back to first - and won a GG there too.
This isn't really comparable.

It's not recent, but 34 YO Ron Santo to 2B came to mind.

Miguel Cabrera to 3B was widely panned as a bad idea at the time, but he actually won his 2 MVPs there.

Every other use of "this song" I can think of is referring reflexively to the song as a whole; cf. Carly Simon's "You probably think this song is about you."

This is the song that doesn't end
Yes it goes on and on my friend
Some people started singing it
Not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it
Forever just because
This is the song that doesn't end...
