Yankees’ David Wells defends Brian Cashman, calls out players in Old-Timers’ Day rant

“It always seems that the GM and managers are getting fired and blamed,” Wells said. “If I was the GM, I would start sending a message. I don’t care who it is. If he’s in the stink hole, send that son of a gun to Triple-A or Double-A and send him a wake-up call. I don’t care how much money they’re making. Send a message to them and let them go sit down there and think about it.”

Wells proceeded to criticize the Yankees’ clubhouse culture, as well as their usage of analytics — something that’s “ruining the game.” The three-time All-Star and two-time World Series winner thinks the Yankees have a great team with plenty of talent, but they don’t have the camaraderie necessary to win.

“I go into clubhouses, guys have their headphones on, they’re hiding in the back room,” Wells said. “If somebody walked into my clubhouse, the first thing I did is introduce myself, can I get a signed ball and how’d you get this guy out? I ask questions. And these guys don’t ask questions. This is analytics.

“These guys don’t have free will to be themselves and try to find their own identity. They’re having an identity brought to them. There’s a game plan. Our game plan was go out there and win. How are we going to do it? Best nine guys are gonna play.”...

And before Wells was pulled away to gather with his former teammates for the on-field ceremony: “It’s such a different world, it’s why everyone should carry a gun. I do!”

That ended...oddly.

“It’s such a different world, it’s why everyone should carry a gun. I do!”

Cuz you never know when some nerd is gonna come up to you and say you should throw more sliders.

Also with all these noise-cancelling headphones, you gotta make a big noise to get somebody's attention.

And sometimes the threat of sending somebody to AAA just isn't threatening enough.

Oh man, can't believe David Wells turned out to be a redass "Get off my lawn!" guy who thinks the problem with the world today is that people aren't big enough ########.

The Yankees weren’t the only subject of Wells’ Old-Timers’ Day rant. The left-hander had tape covering the Nike insignia on the right side of his pinstriped jersey.

“I hate Nike, they’re woke!” Wells said. “I’ve never been into politics, but after COVID happened, you just see everything ... Leave that stuff out!”

I suspect most Jay fans knew this was who Wells is for years. I remember Cito Gaston couldn't stand him - would ride him hard often because he was a jackass even as a rookie. Jays released him in '93 spring despite needing more pitching as he was just too toxic. Only came back years later due to a dumb GM (Ash) who made many many dumb trades including the one where he dumped Wells for a guy who was so hurt he never pitched even in the minors or spring for the Jays. Wells was infamous for being overweight and out of shape as a player but got away with it due to raw talent. I think his attitude has always been 'me first' and everyone else can go to hell.

A kids-these-days rant from David Wells? What next, a flop from James Harden?

Whenever I read crap like this, I just take a few deep breaths and concentrate on Wells' postseason record. I'm pretty sure most Yellow Shirts fans have the same reaction to Schilling.

I’m always pleasantly surprised when a pro athlete has something to say worth listening to beyond the dimensions of their own technique.

This… wasn’t one of those times.

That's great stuff. Pure stream of consciousness craziness

Not at all surprised about him. Gets it from "Attitude Annie."

6 - Wells ####### about Frank Thomas dogging when he was injured and Wells on the Sox.
8 - For postseason, I remember Wells not being able to go against the Marlins because he pulled a muscle waddling up the dugout steps to join a fight.

8 FTR, I'm a fan of the Red Sox, not their yellow shirts.

Alternate jerseys should be restricted to teams that never had any tradition to begin with. Let teams like the Diamondbacks or the Marlins wear 162 different jerseys a year.

Cashman: That's okay David. You don't have to defend me. Ever again.

I think every Old Timer’s Day should be like this- just introduce the old codgers and let them go full Grandpa Simpson as they tell those 21st century brats to get off their field…

I have an idea for a Netflix series- a travel documentary following David Wells as he explores San Francisco, Portland, and NYC.

Everything else aside, how is the this defending Cashman? Wells sounds like he's criticizing a bunch of things that come from the GM.

I'm trying to remember when the last time I heard a real human say "son of a gun" in conversation. Maybe one of my grandfathers' friends? And he died in the late 90's sooooo . . .

Forget it, he's rolling.

I keep chuckling at my own #19. John Blutarsky was always a cartoon character to me, an unrealistic caricature. But after making the comment I keep asking myself "Is David Wells John Blutarsky?" and I keep thinking the answer is yes.

In the past few years others have said that the Yankees' main problem is that it's 100% controlled by analytics, and that nothing will improve as long as that remains the case. Who made the decision to give the team to "analytics?" It seems there's no chance that "analytics" will share the team 50/50 with human beings. I get the feeling that people who know about this are afraid to say much about it.

It's Yogi's basilisk.

I've said too much.

Is David Wells John Blutarsky?

When I think of recent players who would be likely to train for the rigor of a 162-game season by eating a bag of chocolate donuts while smoking a cigarette, Wells may not be #1, but he's on the short list.

I ask questions. And these guys don’t ask questions. This is analytics.
So... I ask questions, but the answers had better be purely anecdotal?

Wells definitely seems like an “I’m just askin’ questions…doin’ my own research” kind of guy.

"Is David Wells John Blutarsky?"
That's "Senator Blutarsky."

So he's more of an intellectual, like Schilling.
