Detroit Tigers sign pitcher Michael Lorenzen to one-year, $8.5 million deal

Lorenzen spent 2022 with the Los Angeles Angels after starting his career with seven seasons for the Cincinnati Reds. He went 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA in 18 starts in 2022, striking out 85 batters but walking 44 over 97 2/3 innings.

In eight MLB seasons, Lorenzen is 31-29 with a 4.10 ERA in 313 games (44 starts). He started 21 games as a rookie in 2015 before Cincinnati moved him to a bullpen role for the next several years. He collected 14 saves in that time.

The Tigers have promised Lorenzen a spot in their starting rotation.

Seems like pretty much every relief pitcher.swingman gets between $7M and $9M AAV this off-season. Very strange.

It's tough being a Tigers fan in New York. I mean, the Mets and Yankees are signing every decent ballplayer in sight...and we sign this stiff. Great.

#1: As I noted in one of the Cubs' threads, they have managed to grab Brad Boxberger for 1/$2.8 with a mutual option. Boxberger is no more exciting than the rest of these guys and is turning 35 but 2020-22 was 147 IP of 132 ERA+ -- a bit hit lucky but solid peripherals. Unless he's hurt, that's a huge bargain in this market. And that was signed a few days ago so it's not like they jumped before the market was set. That was after the Brewers declined a fairly cheap option. Is this guy a massive jerk or something?

He could be a two-way player---his career .710 OPS is better than any Tiger had last year except Eric Haase, and his career 4.8% HR percentage is better than any Tiger's last year.

Yeah, that's a weird one, Walt. Boxberger has been every bit as good as most of the 2/15 brigade.

Dang, I was hoping the Angels would keep him. He was fun as a feel-good, hometown boy story, and, while the injury sucked, his pitching was fine. The best part was that my son was at the beach with a friend and he was down there running and stopped to take a picture with the kids and chat with them. It was a cool experience for my son.

Lorenzen was apparently tired of being the second-best hitting pitcher on his team.

Third best.

Jared Walsh was a two-way player a couple of years ago, too!
