Detroit Tigers’ Spencer Turnbull shuts down Seattle Mariners for MLB’s fifth no-hitter

Spencer Turnbull walked out of the bullpen Tuesday night feeling terrible, hoping a shaky pregame warmup would dissipate once he stepped on the mound.

A few hours later, Turnbull was being slammed in the face with a shaving cream pie and doused in water, beer and baby powder by his Detroit Tigers teammates on the grass at T-Mobile Park.

There was plenty to celebrate after Turnbull joined the parade of no-hitters in 2021.

“It is by far the best night of my life, most exciting and it’s definitely kind of like one of those landmark stamps on my career up to this point,” Turnbull said.

The 28-year-old right-hander tossed the fifth no-hitter of the major league season, baffling the Seattle Mariners in Detroit’s 5-0 win.

This game lowered the Mariner's team batting average to .199. If I did my queries right, this is the lowest team BA in first 43 games since the 1910 White Sox had a .192 (which is also the lowest since 1901). The only other team under .200 was the 1905 Senators at .196.

More like he'll swing and miss at the first pitch.

One-fifth of the league's complete games this year are no-hitters. And one of the 20 counted as a complete game but not a no-hitter.

The Seattle Mariners are batting .199, Joe Biden is batting .528.

   10. Doug Jones threw harder than me Posted: May 19, 2021 at 07:27 PM (#6019767)
I watched the last part of the game. He had good stuff, but he wasn't spectacular. It wasn't like he was Marichal out there, or had pinpoint control. He threw a nice backdoor curveball for the last strikeout. He threw a lot of low strikes that they just never squared up. That's not to say they didn't have some good hacks, but they all went for foul balls. It kinda felt like the Mariners were all standing at a slot machine, feeding in quarter after quarter, and just never even getting a small jackpot.

Interestingly I also watched Mark Melancon close out the game for the Padres. He really doesn't have that good stuff, or even particularly good control (he walked the bases loaded if I remember) but the batters couldn't do much but try to work a walk and swing hard and hope they get lucky, just like with the Turnbull no-hitter.

Seems like it is time to lower the mound and/or move it back

(and restrict pitchers from fielding bunts, and restrict pickoff throws like they are doing in the minors, and make non-closer relief pitchers throw at least 2 or 3 innings).

Isn't Biden over 50% in popularity?

Rioting in the streets? Check.

Huh? What riots are you thinking of?

Oh wow, RMC is wedging in his politic views to an unrelated baseball thread again. So off-brand for him.

As noted above, in the RMC household perhaps, but not for the majority of American adults recently polled.

As noted above, in the RMC household perhaps, but not for the majority of American adults recently polled.

Required a bunch of polls that have huge pro-Biden samples -- Biden +14 or +20 in the November vote obviously does not comport with reality -- to get him barely over 50%. You'd think people would have learned by now that public polling is largely trash.

Corey Kluber did his part with yet another no-hitter...

Wow. I saw Turnbull's last start on the 13th. He was really good that day, but I can't say I saw a no-hitter coming.
   18. Cooper Nielson Posted: May 20, 2021 at 12:15 AM (#6019856)
Random observation: Of the last 6 official no-hitters dating back to last year (and not counting Kluber because I'm struggling to keep up), 5 of the pitchers were in their year-28 season.

Alec Mills, Joe Musgrove, Carlos Rodon, John Means, and Spencer Turnbull.

Wade Miley is 34.
