Detroit Tigers top prospect Spencer Torkelson cuts finger, will miss spring training games

AJ Hinch and his coaching staff had just finalized lineup plans Wednesday for the first couple of exhibition games, which start Sunday, with Tigers’ top prospect Spencer Torkelson to make an early start at third base.

Then came the phone call Wednesday night: Torkelson cut his right index finger at his house in Lakeland. The cut required stitches to close….

According to two sources familiar with the incident, Torkelson was making dinner at a house he shares with Jake Rogers and Riley Greene. They didn’t have a can opener in the house so he tried to improvise with a wine opener that had a serrated, half-inch knife on the other end.

The knife folded up on him, making a half-inch cut in the index finger. He took three stitches to close the wound. No muscle or tendons were affected.

Was it Doug "Chicken Parm" Mirabelli who stabbed himself while trying to open an Xmas gift?

Anyway, yeah, it's kinda dumb. But you're probably just as likely to cut yourself this way chopping onions or whatever. Things happen.

An interesting sentence, because English has a sort of middle voice. So "Spencer Torkelson breaks his leg" would nearly always mean that he was not involved, even accidentally, as the agent of the breaking; he could have gotten it stuck in a glacial crevasse or something. And indeed "Spencer Torkelson cuts finger" could mean that his hand slipped while he was pushing a washing machine out of the way to try to get at a burst pipe. But no, in this case, he was (however inadvertently or however much alcohol was involved) the actual cutter of his own finger.

He could also, based on the headline only, miss games because he's in jail after cutting Rob Manfred's finger. Who can tell?

No, he'd be out on bond while Manfred considers pressing charges.
