Do Head-to-Head Regular Season Records Matter in the Playoffs?

First off, do regular season head-to-head records matter in the playoffs? Since the start of divisional play in 1969, teams that face each other in the playoffs have frequently met in the regular season. Interleague play added eventual World Series matchups to the regular season, and starting in 2023, every playoff matchup will have already occurred during the regular season. Given the sample size of playoff series, if we construct a simple model of series winning percentage that only consists of a team’s regular season winning percentage and its winning percentage in head-to-head matchups, the model horribly inaccurate, with an r-squared of 0.0886 and a mean absolute error of 275 points of winning percentage.

But including head-to-head winning percentage doesn’t really even have a marginal influence on the coin flip; without the head-to-head matchups, the model’s MAE increases to 276 points of winning percentage. Now, a head-to-head record may imply something about a team’s overall strength that isn’t captured in its overall record, but rather than pick up a small sample implication, we can use strength of schedule directly, which does help the model a tiny bit (playoff series are always going to be very uncertain unless we move to best-of-75 series or something wacky).

I guess that means the answer is “no”?

Which I’ve suspected since I was 12 in 1983. Dodgers won 11 out of 12 against the NL East winning Phillies. Then when it counted the Phillies won 3 out of 4.

In 2015, the Cubs took all seven from the Mets during the regular season. NLCS, not so much.

And of course Mets fans of certain ages are all too aware of their club's stomping all over the Dodgers during the 1988 regular season, winning 10 of 11.

That's what immediately cam to mind.

Of all the cliches or arguments for why a team might beat another team in a series, the head to head argument always struck me as one of the stupidest arguments to make. I mean sure mention it as a way to back up the reasoning you gave that is legit about the quality of the teams etc. But for the life of me, I couldn't imagine any reason that head to head record during a 162 game season in which matchups and health is more random than a post season series.

Talk good pitching beats good hitting and vice versa as much as you want, talk about the top three rotation or maybe the offense doesn't have a hand side weakness, or wears a pitcher down by seeing a lot of pitches or whatever argument you want to make, but "well they went 12-4 against them this season" is just a tack on point, not really a good argument for a prediction or eventual results.

The Angels were 8-1 against the Red Sox in 2008, outscoring them 61-33. The Sox won the ALDS 3-1.

I've always thought it not terribly useful there either.

I guess if I squint, I could see some value in looking at head-to-head matchups from late in the season, such as in September. But with the expanded rosters, that may not even be that useful.

If anything, the head-to-head record should be a negative indicator as it's more likely due to luck than the overall record. If the teams have the same overall record, then the one with the better head-to-head will have a worse record against the rest of the league. In 1983, LA would have been 80-70 against the non-PHI while PHI was 89-61 against non-LA.

Well, the way I imagine it is you go "reason why team a has a better chance against team b is because...... "reason".... and you can see that playing out in their head to head matchups this year in these games."

in 2014 the Tigers won the season series over the O's 5-1 and played them in the LDS. some of my Tiger friends claimed it would be an easy win because of that. after getting swept, I reminded them they still had a 5-4 lead in the season series.

The 90-38, 703 WP 2022 Dodgers are 1-5 against the Pirates.

They are also just 3-3 against the Nats. They are 18-5 combined against Giants and Padres but "just" 8-5 against the Rox. They are however 29-3 against the Cubs, Reds, Marlins, DBacks.
