Dodgers pitcher David Price opts out of 2020 MLB season

The Los Angeles Dodgers will not have pitcher David Price in 2020. Price announced Saturday he will not take part in the 2020 Major League Baseball season.

Price, 34, said he believes it’s “in the best interest of my health and my family’s health” that he sits out this year.

Price added he will miss his teammates and will cheer them on. He told the team he look forward to representing it next season. Price finished his note telling everyone to “stay safe, be well and be kind.”

Price was traded to the Dodgers in February as part of the Mookie Betts deal. The 12-year veteran took part in spring training with the team before the coronavirus suspended the season.

All the more power to Price.

For the Dodgers, it may actually be boon to have Price opt out, what with what they were going to pay him in 2020 and their general depth.

So do I.

#2 To be fair, it was always odds against that you'd win the 5th starter job.

That’s a lot of money to leave on the table. Seems like a phantom arm injury would have been well-timed. Get a plasma injection, resume throwing, have a minor setback, come along nicely, rumor a return for playoffs, hang it up and say you will be 100% ready for spring training. $11 million. cha-Ching.

Price has made $207 million in his career and in theory is due $32 million more in 2022, so his financial incentives are slightly different than yours and mine.

I’ve wondered if a year off might not be good for a pitchers. It’s nothing more than a hunch.

Going to war for 3+ years might have saved Bob Feller's career.

3 days after his discharge, Feller threw a complete game victory against the Tigers. Granted he had been stateside for the summer, pitching at Great Lakes Naval Station but still ... spring training is for wimps.

He made up for it by pitching 340+ innings for the lousy 1946 Indians, then 80+ more on a barnstorming tour. Never the same after that.

The Red Sox are paying half his salary.

Wow. Even though he died 10 years ago? How come we hear about Bobby Bonilla but not that?

Because he makes $22,500 a year.

Felix Hernandez and Nick Markakis have opted out.

That’s a lot of money to leave on the table.

Are we sure that he's leaving money on the table? Red Sox and Dodgers both have plenty of incentive to get his salary off the books. I'm sure that arrangements can be made to compensate him for his sacrifice.
