Dodgers Re-Sign Blake Treinen

The Dodgers have re-signed right-handed reliever Blake Treinen to a two-year, $17MM guarantee that includes an $8MM club option or a $1MM buyout for 2023, Bob Nightengale of USA Today was among those to report. Treinen is a client of Apex Baseball.

Treinen was something of a buy-low pickup for the Dodgers last season, though they did have to guarantee the former Athletics standout $10MM. The move paid off handsomely for the World Series-winning Dodgers, who got 25 2/3 innings of 3.86 ERA ball with a 20.6 percent strikeout rate, 7.5 percent walk rate, and a tremendous percent 64 percent groundball rate from Treinen. The 32-year-old continued to average upward of 97 mph on his fastball along the way.

Huh? That's excellent set-up reliever money in pre-covid $. This looks like a case of peripherals, velocity, etc. over actual performance. He's had 6 seasons plus 2020 and out of those he's had one mind-numbingly awesome season (2018), one regular awesome season (2016) and one excellent season (2014) ... and 3+ of below-average leverage reliever which you'll notice includes 2019-20. So his last 84 innings are a 93 ERA+ and 4.54 FIP, negative WAR which is not 2/$17 performance. The Dodgers seem to have missed the memo on "pretend we can't afford anybody."

Boy that 2018 was pretty amazing though -- 80 IP (big for a modern reliever), 9-2 with 38 saves, 0.78 ERA, 1.82 FIP, 531 ERA+.

So he was a low buy and now they're giving him a pay cut. Now bring back Turner so you can call it an offseason.

you ain’t lying! It was fun to watch. And then equally unfun the next season when he just looked lost out there. You knew Melvin was trying to put him in position to regain his confidence and you knew it was just going to get worse
