Dodgers re-sign Sturtze

The Dodgers re-signed reliever Tanyon Sturtze to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

Sturtze pitched in three games for the Dodgers last season before being designated for assignment before being hired as the team’s third bullpen catcher.

Nothing can stop the Dodgers from winning the World Series now!

And Scott Proctor breaths a sigh of relief.

So the Dodgers have an opening for a third bullpen catcher?

I'm willing to suit up.

Or will Sturtze pitch and catch?

The Dodgers had triple barreled action in the bullpen? Three bullpen catchers seems excessive.

I'd like to see Torre bring Quantrill and Gordon back.

It would make discovery easier during their class action lawsuit.

Not really -- you have one warm up the pitchers, one tend to the tomato garden, and one screw in the light bulbs. A model of modern efficiency.

You have to ask yourself which you'd rather have: a community park or a third bullpen catcher.

That sounds like a sinecure to Tanyon for his (couple of) years of loyal service to Joe. Nevermind actually having the need to warm up three pitchers, are there even any bullpens that have three mounds?

So I guess we can scratch Sturtze off the list of suspects for "veteran ace who cried when Torre sent him out to the mound".

I'm just impressed that he was a bullpen catcher. Is that a switch that a lot of guys make? Mediocre MLB pitcher to bullpen catcher?

Definitely. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I think one of the parks that has the double decker outfield bullpens has three.

You misread it. He was the catcher in their third bullpen. It's actually a timeshare in Vail. The McCourts stay there when skiing in the winter, but it operates as a third bullpen in the summer months.

I know when Dale Sveum got cut by the '98 Yankees he stayed on as a bullpen catcher. So it's not unprecedented for a Torre team.

And just like Sturtze is trying to do, Sveum would be an active player the next season.

Take that Craig Biggio and Rick Ankiel!
