Dodgers wear out Jacob deGrom, feast on Mets’ bullpen

LOS ANGELES –Like the prizefighter he is, Jacob deGrom absorbed some body blows Monday against the Dodgers, but never let the game get away from him.

He retired Cody Bellinger in big spots. He stranded six men. He left with a lead in a much-anticipated pitching matchup against Clayton Kershaw.

Yet, in doing all that, deGrom needed to use 105 pitches in five innings. He left it all on the field, but, baseball is a nine-inning game. There were still 12 outs to go.

And this Mets bullpen didn’t offer any relief.

The sort of bullpen that would convince Billy Martin that he had the right idea….

deGrom could have left with a bigger lead, but 2 beautifully executed relay plays gunned down Mets at the plate. No fault with the runners or 3B coach Gary DeSarcina: both plays required perfection and that's just what the Dodgers got.

Carlos Gomez getting thrown out at third in the 8th inning was the bigger sin -- that also required a perfect throw to get him, but you can't make the last out at third when your team is down by two* in the 8th inning. Plus he had already seen Bellinger's arm in action earlier in the game, so he really had no excuse.

* If Gomez hadn't been out, the runner tagging up from third would have scored making it a 2-run game.

May I take this opportunity of emphasizing that there is no cannibalism among the LA Dodgers. Absolutely none, and when I say none, I mean there is a certain amount, more than we are prepared to admit, but all new players are warned that if they wake up in the morning and find any toothmarks at all anywhere on their bodies, they're to tell management immediately so that they can immediately take every measure to hush the whole thing up. And, finally, necrophilia is right out.

I caught this game almost by accident at my local (not so) micro brewery and it was quite the entertaining game. Bellinger is ridiculous in RF.
