Does Josh Donaldson’s Signing Move Us Closer to a Blockbuster Trade?

The Twins reportedly signed third baseman Josh Donaldson on Tuesday night, adding a premier offensive player and former MVP to an already-potent lineup. Sure, it’s questionable to give four years and around $100 million to a 34-year-old with injury concerns, but there’s little doubt the impact Donaldson can make for a contending team.

That’s why so many teams in need of a third baseman or a middle-of-the-order bat—such as the Braves, Nationals, Rangers and, to a lesser extent, the Dodgers—were supposedly in the running to sign him. Now, each of those teams have to look elsewhere, which very likely means the trade market. Might we be on the brink of a blockbuster? Let’s canvas the marquee names thought to be available.

A discussion of three players’ trade potential- unfortunately, not for each other…..

the Braves, Nationals, Rangers and, to a lesser extent, the Dodgers

Hard to see the Nats making a "blockbuster" trade for a 3B at this point. Asdrubal and Kendrick on 1-year contracts, Castro on two years, Kieboom on the way and they're near (over?) the lux tax threshold -- pretty clear signs they've decided to try to piece something together for a year across 2B and 3B (and 1B for that matter).

They may have been for a while but I see ZiPS Dodgers projections are out. Bellinger easily at the top but Muncy, Seager and Turner all project over 3 WAR and Lux just below that. Chris Taylor is at 2.0 so back-up IF is pretty well-covered (and Verdugo at 2.0 so Taylor won't be in CF all the time either). They haven't yet been able to swing a deal they liked for Lindor or Betts and although the price for Bryant should be less than either of those guys, I don't see the Cubs getting too excited about Bryant for Gonsolin (that ZiPS doesn't like much anyway) ... Verdugo and Gonsolin maybe.

It would be cool to see the Rangers take themselves seriously but they're clearly not a a point where they could trade any ML-ready talent. So definitely not on the Bryant radar.

As to Arenado and what the Rox want, will leave to one of our resident fans. My opinion in the earlier thread is that Arenado is on a long-term contract at or near market value so the Rox can't expect much in return ... but also that unless one of these teams made a serious effort at Rendon, I'm not clear why they'd be overly interested in taking on Arenado's contract. The article also mentions Lindor and since I don't understand what Cleveland's been up to the last couple of years, I won't speculate on what they'd settle for but obviously more than what the Dodgers offered.

I think it’s fair say that maybe I’m more on the... amenable.. side of trading Bryant than the median Cubs fan, but I would be quite unhappy with Gonsolin + Verdugo.

Gonsolin will be 26 in May and his nice minor league numbers have always come with the caveat of him being a bit old for his level...

Would the Dodgers do something like Urias + Verdugo for Bryant and Quintana?

Oh I wasn't suggesting it as a good idea just that Verdugo maybe gets them in the door and he does have 5 more years of control so it's not clear how much more they need to add. And between Chapman and Russell maybe the Cubs should take a break from guys who've been suspended for DV like Urias. Certainly Lux and it seemed like May were off limits for Lindor so they won't do that for Bryant. As usual, I don't know squat about the Dodgers' system and MLB's team rankings aren't up yet so Gonsolin just seemed like next obvious guy on the list and also a guy the Dodgers won't care about losing.

I don’t think so.
