Does Major League Baseball need an offseason transaction deadline?

Sub required.

Baseball front offices don’t agree on much, but most agree on one thing: A lot more gets done on a deadline. With the notable exception of Mariners GM Jerry Dipoto, who regularly treats November and every offseason month thereafter like its own trade deadline (I love transactions,” he glibly said last month at the GM meetings), baseball’s frenzy of deals this past week has been both wholly uncharacteristic and incredibly entertaining. With the Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire on Dec. 1 at 11:59 p.m. ET, an unofficial deadline for player transactions was put in place. And pandemonium ensued, resulting in more than 40 big-league November signings for approximately $1.6 billion (per FanGraphs Jon Becker) as of early Wednesday morning. The chaos reached a fever pitch this week after Marcus Semien’s seven-year $175 million deal on Sunday evening marked the first mega-deal and nine-figure signing of the offseason. Since then, five top free agents have followed suit: Corey Seager ($325 mil/10 yrs), Javier Baez ($140 mil/6 yrs), Max Scherzer ($130 mil/3 yrs, Robbie Ray ($115 mil/5 yrs) and Kevin Gausman (5/$110 mil).

It raises the question: Should baseball do this more? Should there be some kind of deadline or deadlines or, at the very least, a dead period every offseason to change the hot stove’s steady trickle of news to a dominant, spectacular blast? Front offices from more than a dozen clubs polled at last month’s GM meetings were almost unanimously in favor of the idea of potential modifications.

Dipoto actually said, "I love transactions"? LMAO!

No. Next question.

Nah. While teams and some fans might like the pressure it creates, I don't see much point. Maybe a roster freeze from December 15 to January 2nd to cover the holidays as an experiment.

Sure ... and any unsigned player at the deadline can take a QO contract with their old team ... regardless of whether they were offered a QO. :-)

This doesn’t make sense to me. They have a deadline. Spring training. Make it work

No, but a dead period between the December winter meetings and the end of the year wouldn't be a terrible idea.
