HOW WILL THE ANGELS LOSE TODAY?!

Bah! Rendon is back, and David Fletcher is Ozzie Smith and Ty Cobb rolled into one. The Angels will be fine.

It also helps that the Mariners are terrible.

This part is the most true, though Fletcher appears to have gone from borderline starter to borderline star in two years.

I think it was Snapper who was questioning my faith in the reality of Fletcher's abilities. And yes, SSS and all that, but he's been really good for basically his entire big league career at this point. Garret Anderson was the last Angels jersey I bought. I might need to get a David Fletcher. He's so much fun to watch.

"Braves outfielder Nick Markakis has reversed course on his choice to opt out of the 2020 season, David O’Brien of The Athletic was among those to report on Twitter. He will re-join the team, though his precise timeline for returning to active duty is not yet known."

José Iglesias, the veteran ‘good field, no hit’, career .689 OPS/85 OPS+ shortstop, formerly with the Red Sox, Tigers & Reds, is hitting in the 3rd slot for the Orioles this season. He is batting .538/.538/.769 this year, in 3 games/13 PA, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that he will not maintain that pace over the full season. Gets to show his stuff against Gerrit Cole tonight.

Yeah that's stupid, their slugging first baseman should hit third.

Zips projected wrc+ for the Orioles lineup:
89
84
77 (Iglesias)
77
79
64 (Davis)
97
71
90

Scored 16 runs against the Sox.

Nate Pearson's first inning is in the books (assuming the game becomes official)

K
BB (and allowed a steal)
groundout
lineout to left

Wow, Davis still starts for the O's!?! Are they going to start him until the end of the contract?

Hopefully only as long as it takes to game Mountcastle's service time, then our long national nightmare will be over.
If he sticks around longer than that then I have no ideas.

By the way, in their last game, Davis finally crushed a ball and he didn't run fast, thinking he'd homered. The wind knocked it down to only hitting the very top of the monster. He barely made it into second with an RBI double. He then got doubled up on a lazy pop fly, either misjudging that one as well, or else forgetting the number of outs. It's hit only hit of the season and with any luck the last of his career.

Iglesias is the only person in the Orioles lineup that I have ever heard of.

Interesting top of 1st in Baltimore: LeMahieu HR, Catchers Interference against Judge & Stanton*, BB & SF. 2-0, Yankees.

*Courtesy of Pedro Severino. Anyone know the CI record for a game or inning?

The Cubs' standard 8 runs will not cut it tonight.
   14. The Yankee Clapper Posted: July 29, 2020 at 08:29 PM (#5966765)
Judge HR, Stanton BB & Hicks HR makes it 5-1, Yankees.

Brad Hand about to have an epic meltdown in the 9th inning in Cleveland.

tonight is 5th anniversary of what the Mets announcers call "The Tears Of Wilmer."

Flores, who had signed with the Mets as a 16-year-old, was told by fans during the game who saw it on Twitter that he had been traded to Milwaukee along with Zack Wheeler for Carlos Gomez.

his sobbing on the field made him an instant folk hero. he'll never have to pay for a drink in NYC ever again. imagine a player who wanted to be a "Met for life."

CarGo, meanwhile, was dealt to Houston the next day with Michael Fiers in a trade that included a prospect by the name of Josh Hader.

the next day after that, the Mets instead acquired Cespedes from Detroit for Michael Fulmer and then stomped their way to the NL pennant. that same night, Flores hit a 12th-inning walkoff HR.

Flores still has the Mets' franchise record for career walkoff RBI, which - no, I can't explain it.

Howie... I'm at a loss, was Flores traded or not?

Just a quick note, as no one else really cares, the Red Sox are NOT losing so far today with their "ace" Eovaldi on the bump, 2-2 in the 5th and those 2 runs are off DeGrom, so more amazing Red Sox feats today!

Fitting that they are playing at the Mets on the day Johnny Mac dies.

joe kelly suspended 8 games.

   21. Howie Menckel Posted: July 29, 2020 at 09:29 PM (#5966785)
one of the many casualties of the pandemic is that Mets rookies have not been indoctrinated.

so 21-year-old phenom Andres Gimenez triples with 2 out in the bottom of the 6th to give deGrom an unprecedented third run and a 3-2 lead.

but veteran RP Seth Lugo - unhittable unless deGrom has a lead - allows a leadoff HR in the 7th to allow the Earth to resume spinning on its axis.

credits.

Padres are great defensively.

Red Sox up 6-4 heading into the bottom of the 9th. Will they actually hold a team under 5 runs? A nation waits with bated breath....(well a few sort of, but not really interested bystanders, but still!)
   26. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: July 29, 2020 at 10:54 PM (#5966810)
The answer of course is no, the Red Sox can't hold anyone below 5 runs...about this lose this now.

Red Sox win! Miracles will never cease..

Workman reminds me of Aroldis Chapman and many other closers.

you can tell within a few pitches if they are "on" that night.

if not, every batter can just be a statue and take their walk, because all of them will get 4 balls before they get 3 strikes.

at 6-5, bases loaded, one out, Cespedes has a 2-0 count and swings at ball 3 before striking out.

rinse, and repeat.

guys, it's not complicated. check the H/IP allowed, and the K/IP. if both are daunting, and the closer doesn't have it, walk this way to victory.

The Mariners are really terrible.
   30. Los Angeles El Hombre of Anaheim Posted: July 30, 2020 at 12:06 AM (#5966819)
The Angels are even worse, somehow?
   31. The Gary DiSarcina Fan Club (JAHV) Posted: July 30, 2020 at 04:29 AM (#5966825)
Apparently I grossly underestimated the putridity of the Angels' bullpen.
