Dominican Today: Los Angeles Dodgers prospect is killed by companion

A young ballplayer recently signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers was killed Thursday morning with a bat to the head by a companion in the baseball field in the sector Los Tres Ojos, while they were practicing.

The victim, Yariel Angel Sanchez, 23, was taken to the emergency room at the DarĂo Contreras hospital, where he died moments later.

The around 16 year-old unidentified suspect fled the scene right after the attack on Sanchez.

Witnesses said the Major League prospect and his aggressor argued over a ball and when Sanchez turned his back was struck with the bat leaving him left unconscious, and later passed away.

The suspect should have his children taken away.

Why would a 23-year old Dominican be "recently signed" ? The average signing age inthe Dominican is somewhere around 17, right ?

Yes.
I would guess that means he was just signed to fill out the roster for some Dominican League team. Kind of how college baseball seniors will go undrafted and then get signed to be the backup catcher for someone's GCL team

Why would they publish a picture of someone in their coffin? It looks like something from the wild west.

The headline makes the death seem really seedy, like the "Hogan's Heroes" guy or something.

"Why would they publish a picture of someone in their coffin? It looks like something from the wild west."

Casket photography was actually very common in the olden days (late 19th century). Cameras back then had very long shutter speeds, so one of the best ways to get a non-blurry image of someone was to wait until they were dead.

In this case, I'm guessing that his family's just too poor to have a camera, so nobody ever took a picture of him before.

Completely unrelated (and very different in tone), but the headline reminded me of this.
