Don’t look now, Mets have a new best pitcher

Don’t look now but Matz’ 3.55 ERA is the best among Mets starting pitchers. Better than Jacob deGrom. Better than Noah Syndergaard. Better than Zack Wheeler.

“That’s the best Matz has ever pitched,’’ Mickey Callaway said. “He got the ball and threw the ball, not one ounce of emotion. You could tell he was locked in. He did what he had to do against a lineup like that. He’s been our most consistent starter.’’

Sure, the decent guy is "best" because the others are doing poorly. I have the best ERA on the Orioles!!

The other three have far better FIP, though. Wheeler at 3.22, deGrom at 3.53, Syndergaard at 3.63, and Matz at 4.66 (prior to last night's game). Also, Matz has been a good pitcher, when healthy. He's just never been healthy- even making 30 starts last season he racked up only 154 innings.

Don't look now, but the best starting pitcher on the Orioles, John Means, has a better ERA than any of these guys.

Matz's numbers have been severely hurt by that one truly disastrous game he had in Philly his third start of the year. 0 (zero) IP, 4 hits (2 of them HR), 1 BB, 8 runs (6 earned). Take out that start and his ERA is down to 2.49.

I feel like every Mets pitcher has had at least one disastrous start. Not as bad as that Matz one, though.

I think you can do that for every pitcher. Matz has also seemed lucky. I was at a game last week where he pitched. He gave up 10 hits, 2 walks and 1 run in 6 innings. He had guys on every inning and they didn't score.

Oh, of course you can. I'm just saying that we'd be marveling at what a good (great?) year Matz is having -- Zack Wheeler 2018, part II, perhaps? -- if that start happens on, say, August 17, rather than April 17.

I like Matz, but he just looks like he is hanging on by a thread. Everything I read is that it hurts to throw.

That's nothing. I've been top 10 in Cy Young Award voting nearly each of the last 50+ years.

You can do that for every pitcher, but 0 IP and 6 ER is an extreme that is rarely approached.

And they have a new worst pitcher in Edwin Diaz. Ffs, that was a waking nightmare.
