Dorktown: A History of the Seattle Mariners

I think we all need something to distract us, and what better than a Jon Bois video about the Seattle Mariners.

EDIT: Part 1 is linked in the title. Part 2 is linked here. Part 3, here. Part 4, here. Part 5, here. Part 6, here.

Part one of six, IIRC.

I watched it at lunch, and it's great. Rick Honeycutt! Maury Wills! Mr. Jello! The 9-2-7-2 double play! And arson, lots and lots of arson.

I dunno why Jon has to let that other guy talk.

I don't mind Alex Rubenstein. I'm just slightly disappointed they didn't bring up Funny Nose Glasses Night, still one of the zaniest ballpark promotions.

Still can't wait for the other five parts.

They also left out who exactly busted Maury Wills in the Great Batting Box Caper: none other than then-Oakland manager Billy Martin! (You can't con a con man.)

Part 2 just went up, featuring Ken Griffey, Jr.

Thanks, SdeB. I'll try to remember to add the links to the header as they're published.

This is good but...they're up to the start of the 1995 ALDS, and the name Edgar Martinez has not been mentioned?

I mean, they first mentioned Randy Johnson at the end of the second episode, then we got some of his back story, before proceeding. I'm sure we're about to get that for Edgar.

I want the entire third episode to be about Edgar, and about the growing sweat stain on the bill of Bob Wolcott's cap in his playoff start. That's it. I'm sure I will be disappointed with their choices.

I believe that election is still the closest in municipal history.

One thing not mentioned in this video is that the Mariners probably would have gone into the tank earlier in the season if they hadn't had then-new wild card to be playing for.

Speaking of Bob Wolcott, I remember Piniella juggling the rotation near the end of the season to keep him out of a pressure game, which of course backfired when they foundered behind their better pitchers and needed him for a must-win anyway.

Funny how they mention the M's seemingly endless supply of power hitters without mentioning what a bandbox the Kingdome was.

The Mariners moving from the Kingdome to Safeco in the middle of the 1999 season always struck me as odd. How unusual is it for a team to switch home parks (for good) during a season?

Their 1977 expansion mates did. The Jays moved out of Exhibition and into SkyDome in the middle of 1989.

The Reds moved into Riverfront Stadium on June 30, 1970. Three weeks later, the Pirates moved into Three Rivers Stadium.

Part 3 is up (and linked at the top of the thread). It covers about a week of their history.

Oh, and did I mention Edgar Martinez? They introduce him in this episode.

11 & 12>> And the Phillies were to have moved to The Vet in May 1970, but construction issues postponed the completion.

For those eagerly awaiting Part 4, it appears that there are copyright issues being resolved. I assume it's less "we're negotiating the use of copyrighted material" and more "we need to re-edit and narrate the whole damn thing".

Jon Bois tweeted out that Part 4 will be out today. Also:
Jon Bois @jon_bois
this episode will feature:
- a presidential campaign ended because it was causing its candidate to miss the ricki lake show
- an absolute death star of a baseball team
- an almost impossibly perfect passing of the torch from hero to hero
- alex rodriguez trying to sell his jizz

Part 5 (The Age of Ichiro) is up, and linked above.
   21. villageidiom Posted: May 04, 2020 at 08:30 AM (#5947275)
Ichiro, you bat left-handed despite being a natural righty. Why is that? I don't know.

Ichiro, haven't you been intimidated by all these big, strong American pitchers? No.

Ichiro, who do you ask for advice when you're in a slump? Me.

Ichiro, in just your eighth Major League Baseball game you made one of the throws of the decade to nail Terrence Long from right field. How did you do it? Why did he run when I was going to throw him out?

Ichiro, what's your dog's name? I don't have my dog's permission to tell you that.

Ichiro, what will you do once you retire? I dunno, I guess I'll die.

My research indicates that's the most common explanation.

#22 Like a lot of Canadian kids, I'm right-handed but shoot (hockey) left handed. And golf right handed.

Wasn't the curve of the stick. Curved sticks didn't exist when I started to play hockey. Wasn't emulating my favorite player -- he shot right.

It just felt right when I started and nobody tried to change me.

The number of Canadian kids shooting left dropped quite a bit as hockey started to organize younger kids.

This has been a great series.

Part 6 is up. It's almost an hour, but it's a worthwhile ending to the series.

Not exactly the same as what you're asking about (which has already been answered by others), but the WWII-era Indians just straight up had two home parks for about a decade, splitting time between League Park and Cleveland Stadium from 1937-46 before permanently moving into the latter.

All six parts total up to 3 hours and 40 minutes. It's still 220 minutes of brilliance!
