Dusty Baker likely to be back with Astros, James Click in limbo

Dusty Baker received a one-year offer to manage the Astros in 2023, and his return is said to be likely. Baker, 73, seems to be OK going one year at a time.

Astros GM James Click also is believed to have received a one-year extension offer on a contract that expired Oct. 31, which obviously isn’t much of a reward for a young GM after winning the World Series. Click told reporters in Las Vegas he’s “in discussions” about a new deal, though it isn’t known whether Astros owner Jim Crane is willing to alter the one-year offer, which is stunningly light following two straight World Series appearances. Click didn’t reveal any upset about a situation that is said to be upsetting, it’s unknown whether he will accept a one-year deal from Houston.

The Astros have called a press conference for Wednesday, and uncomfortably Click was unaware about this until told by reporters at the GM Meetings — though he handled the whole interview session with grace and even humor. The short extension offer for the GM hasn’t been explained, but sources suggest they believe Crane credits Baker more for the title, appreciates his old-school baseball calls and doesn’t want to emphasize analytics even more.

Analytics got you two rings, you dumbfuck. Is this guy seriously going to speedrun the rise and fall of the Jerry Jones Cowboys?

I'll see your "sources suggest they believe" and raise you a "Click didn’t reveal any upset about a situation that is said to be upsetting"

i heard rumors earlier this year that crane wanted to get rid of click. every other GM must be praying that's true. sort of reminds me of some owner - i forget who - who got rid of his manager/GM because that person got more credit for the team's success than he did.

he figgers to replace his WINNING GM who has set up the team for what looks to me like at least 3 more years majors AND minors in spite of few top "prospects" - see hensley, hunter brown, most of his latino pitchers, etc. heck, see chaz mccormick

click's scouting, analytics and development guys are outstanding. i thought that after they changed pitching coaches that it would not end well, but RONGGGGGGG

has crane lost his f***ing mind?

i guess 2 pennants and 1 WS in 3 years don't cut it.

Sure, that's what the numbers say, but his gut tells him otherwise.

Somehow I get the feeling that young Jim would not be unemployed for long and would possibly be up for a pay rise if he so desired.

It is odd that sometimes even people who would appear to be highly intelligent cannot see the forest from the trees.

Another Tal Smith 1980 situation?

Remember, the minimum GM standard in Houston is "be smarter than the guy who traded away Joe Morgan" so a lotta trees to sift through before you can see the forest. Or something.

Crane brings in another GM and wins, then he'll clearly believe the only front office constant in those three titles is him.

The Astro’s guys in those departments are outstanding. They should be fine unless Click takes them somewhere else with him. Pretty much everyone (on the playing field) who contributed to this team was already in the organization in 2019.

Exceptions are:

Ryne Stanek
Hector Neris
Rafael Montero

That’s about 180 innings of really good relief pitching. Everybody else who was worth even half a win was already there, in the majors or minors. I’m not saying Click did anything wrong here, just that he came into a situation that was well set up for success. He certainly could have screwed things up, and certainly deserves credit for not doing so.

Birnam Wood will eventually come to Dunsinane.

#11 But that's the thing isn't it? What are the odds that you can hold it all together if you don't retain the point man.

It's shockingly easy to unravel a top tier organization. I don't know that it will in fact unravel, but this kind of discussion would concern me if I was in the organization.

Verlander was an Astro in 2019, but I still think you give Click full credit for his 2022 season.

It's always difficult to know what impact the GM has. The main difference between Hou 2019 and 2022 is that the pitching staff is almost completely different. Sure Uquidy and Valdez were there but small players. The innings were Verlander, Cole, Miley, Peacock, Osuna, Devenski, Rondon, Harris, Pressly, McHugh. Most of those guys aren't there anymore. Do we say a GM has no role in deciding to let almost all of those guys go and replace them with minor-leaguers? No role in deciding which minor-leaguers get a shot? No role in the successful transition to the majors?

Possibly not, it could be Dusty and his staff and nothing to do with Click hires. I'm impressed with somebody -- the 2020 staff is almost completely different from 2019. For 2020-22, Houston has had only a bit over 500 innings tossed by a pitcher with a below-average ERA+ ... and 164 were tossed by Urquidy with a 98 ERA+ this year. (out of 3414 innings total) So they remade the staff, used the kids, none of the kids flopped or even struggled for a season before putting it together.
