Eight ejected after wild brawl between Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels

The Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels engaged in a lengthy full-team brawl in the second inning on Sunday after tensions over two days of inside pitches boiled over.

Seattle manager Scott Servais, Los Angeles interim manager Phil Nevin and six players were ejected after the brouhaha, which stopped and started twice before Angels closer Raisel Iglesias came back out to the empty field to throw large containers of sunflower seeds and gum onto the infield.

Seattle lost three of the first four hitters in its lineup: Jesse Winker, Julio Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford. Angels pitchers Iglesias, Andrew Wantz and Ryan Tepera also were tossed.

The Mariners’ Winker was hit by the first pitch of the second inning by Angels opener Wantz, who also had thrown a pitch behind the head of Rodriguez in the first inning.

The first pitch to Rodriguez appeared to be a response to Erik Swanson’s 95 mph fastball near Mike Trout’s head in the ninth inning Saturday night, a throw that infuriated the three-time American League MVP. The umpires gathered together after Wantz’s pitch but only issued warnings to both dugouts.

“That probably shouldn’t happen in the game, what happened out there today,” Servais said. “Emotions running high, but it was pretty clear what was going on. They switched, put an opener in there to throw some balls at us. Got out of hand from there, and kind of a black eye.”

Fan glasses off here for a minute, Nevin's a red-ass and this was pretty clearly intentional and the reason behind starting Wantz, at least to buzz the tower on Rodriguez. Not sure if he was ordered to hit Winker or he did it on his own. The only obvious ejections were Nevin, Wantz, Winker, Servais, and Crawford, who was throwing overhanders while not really engaged with anyone. Also, clearly Iglesias should have been ejected after his outburst, but that came after he was already ejected, and wasn't really sure why (maybe there's evidence of why he was tossed that I haven't seen). We obviously don't know what was said from the dugout, but if Winker just goes to first, the Mariners probably win the game. Not that it really matters who wins that game anyway. Nevin and Wantz were so obvious that they could be facing long suspensions, and maybe Winker too for flipping off the fans.

Fan glasses back on: Throw at Trout and find out.

Historical note: The last really major brawl that the Angels were involved in that spawned multiple waves of beatdowns was in 1998, against the Royals, and was started after one guy was drilled twice and he charged the mound, which prompted the Angels to hit Dean Palmer, which prompted the other Scott Service to hit Darin Erstad, which prompted the Angels to hit Jose Offerman, that led to the huge brawl, which itself was kind of petering out until Felix Martinez (a real sack of crap if there ever was one) while standing behind his teammate sucker punched Damon Mashore, which led to a huge bunch of guys beating the #### out of Felix Martinez. That one guy who was drilled twice in the back to start it all? Phil Nevin.

This is the kind of stuff you get with Phil Nevin as your manager. I don't disagree with Trout being upset; the Mariners got a little too up and in with him. But I don't think nailing a guy is the right way to go about solving that problem. Nevin's going to take that route every time.

Jeff Conine, who was on the Royals at the time, explained that this brawl stemmed from reliever Jim Pittsley taking a smoke break and not realizing the Royals had retaliated already.

Yeah no issues with Trout being upset and really no particular issue with the Angels throwing at Rodriguez in the first inning the next day. That should have been the end of it. The problem is once you've thrown at Rodriguez is you come in on someone else intentionally or not it is going to get things riled up.

Ok, but honorable mention for the Lackey/Kendall kerfuffle of 2006.

Also, you can't throw behind the guy's head. That look like intent to injure. Give him a fastball in the ribs or butt, and things probably don't get so far out of hand.

Hilarious that he also says none of them defended Felix Martinez because no one on the team liked him. That would be a theme throughout his short career.

Phone rings in Artless Moreno's office, from a staffer.
"Sir, the Insurance company that insures our player contracts is on the line. There is lots of laughing, but I can seem to make out that they are raising our rates. Again."
Artless: "Damn. Time to raise the price of beer, I suppose. Put them on. And call the Anaheim city council and tell them I want my money back , too, if all those ((&*()'s aren't in jail already"

Eight ejected after wild brawl

I've yet to see a calm, sedate brawl, but maybe I'm watching the wrong games.

Also, I'm disappointed that there's only one Police Squad! reference so far. (I mean, it was the same two teams, people...!)

The Angels can’t tolerate other teams throwing at Trout, but their response might not have been the most effective way of preventing that. They may have long-term issues with the Mariners.

On the suspensions, I see the Angels interpreter got 2 games. Way to show up the trainers & ball boys that sit on their butt when a melee/fracas/brouhaha/brawl/riot breaks out!

I have a hunch that Nevin's going to end up suspended a lot.

I assume the comment from MLB was something along the line of a manager must not add gasoline to the fire -- and that's not how Nevin seems to roll. Maybe he'll learn.

Jesse Winker was asked if was happened yesterday for a bad look for baseball:

“It’s a bad look for Phil Nevin,” he said.

Winker said Nevin and Anthony Rendon were chirping from the dugout, which he didn’t appreciate.,

I think managers and coaches can still do everything short of be in the dugout or on the field when they're suspended. I recall seeing a player on the field during BP while under suspension, though I think it was ending within a day.

I mean, someone's gotta make sure all the players understand "Hold me back, bruh! You wanna throw down??"

Suspended players can work out with the club and can participate in batting practice before the gates open before a game.

They're in the same division. They're already maximum rivals.

The carnage continues - Angels Reliever Archie Bradley Fractured Elbow In Brawl:
Angels reliever Archie Bradley was placed on the 15-day injured list with a fracture in his throwing elbow this evening. . . . Bradley suffered the injury during Sunday’s brawl between the Halos and Mariners, when he slipped trying to climb over the dugout railing.
I thought these guys were athletes?
