And CB Bucknor, Joe West, Angel Hernandez, Doug Eddings, and Laz Diaz live....what a ####### travesty.

I had never heard of him, or at least remebered his name. A good ump is like that. He will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.

Really? Cooper, perhaps because he'd been around so long, was one of the few non-awful umpires I could actually name and ID by sight.

Terrible. I had a friend die similarly (and about the age) after shoulder surgery.

Survival stats are great for routine surgery but it’s 1 out of X, not 0 out of X.

If you told me (in a baseball context) that Eric Cooper died, I'd figure he was a generic middle reliever who had pitched 350 games in the AL and I had never heard of him before.

That's a sucky way to go. I feel badly for his parents, burying a child, no matter how old. RIP

What a shame. I certainly remember his name, but I can't think of a single memorable call he made. And, as Meatwad said, that's the highest praise you can give an umpire. He will be missed.

My condolences to his family and friends.

Yeah, my wife had a friend in her mid-30s who died after a blood clot related to a routine knee injury. She was wearing a knee brace, and when she took the brace off and stood up, the clot traveled to her heart or brain (I can't remember which).

I too knew someone who died like this -- he was a football player at my (D-3) school who lived on my dorm floor. Recovering from knee surgery, blood clot traveled to the lungs, dead at 20 or whatever he was.
