ESPN announces eight-part ‘The Yankees Win’ docuseries, with J.J. Abrams, Connor Schell, Libby Geist, and Jonathan Hock involved

ESPN Films today announced “The Yankees Win,” an eight-part documentary event that brings to life the storied history of the most famed franchise in sports. Fifty years after the larger-than-life George Steinbrenner bought the club, his legacy has transformed the mere notion of sports ownership forever. Produced in partnership with Major League Baseball, with extensive access to the league’s unparalleled archives, the series will feature players, managers, coaches, executives, writers, commentators, and fans in candid interviews and some never-before-seen footage.

…The series is directed by Emmy and Peabody winner Jonathan Hock (“Survive and Advance,” ”The Best That Never Was,” “Of Miracles and Men”) and is executive produced by ESPN Films in association with Major League Baseball. The project is being produced by Words + Pictures, Hock Films, Bad Robot and Zipper Bros Films. JJ Abrams, Rachel Rusch Rich, Glen Zipper, Connor Schell, Libby Geist, Annie Sundberg, Ricki Stern and Nick Trotta and Sean Stuart will serve as Executive Producers.

Only 8 parts?

Yankee fan here. I will be honest and ask is this necessary and will it bring any added value to what is already out there.

Do we need more interviews with Keith Olbermann, Billy Crystal and Rudy Guliani about what it means to be a Yankees fan? (it is not any more or less special than being a Red Sox fan - sorry Burnsie - or any other major league team.)

While Hock is a very good director I wish his efforts could be put to more obscure stories from modern baseball.

The fact that it is called "The Yankees Win." makes me shudder.

Kudos to ESPN for working hard to address the dire lack of Yankees content in the media.

delicious in that it comes along in the midst of their worst 'winning' drought in a century.

I guess the highlights of each season in the last dozen or so end with clinching a playoff berth, lol.

the key question is, will Billy Crystal get one entire episode - or will he be sprinkled in extensively in all 8 parts?

hard pass

2, presumably this is being driven by ESPN's need to have its own intellectual property in regards the Yankees.

(Frankly, I don't mind ESPN producing content such as this. Keeps them from doing dumber things).

They misspelled "Thuuuuuuuuuuuuuuh".

Come on people. Potential here for a creative thread along the lines of The Death of Derek Jeter. Can we get a John Ford treatnent? Howard Hawks? John Huston? Frank Capra? Scorcese, Coppola, Altman, Romero, Brooks, Lean, Kubrick?

If they do like a docudrama that seem to be in fashion nowadays they can have Larry David play Steinbrenner. It's gold, Jerry!

As I first viewed the text at 10,000 feet I thought it said Zapruder Bros Films. It got my hopes up that maybe they were going to take down Sterling.

John Sterling as Jim Garrison:

JS: The President's head goes back, and to the left. Back and to the left. How about that, Suzyn? He must've been shot from the front and right. Not from the Book Depository direction at all.

SW: Isn't that when the car sped up to get out of there? I think that acceleration moved his head.

JS: Sorry folks, I missed that one. Looks like the President didn't get shot.

SW: No, he definitely got shot. He was hit a couple times before then.

JS: It just goes to show you can't predict assassinations.

I'm sorry, I think that dethrones Metamorphosis from the Death of Derek Jeter thread.

-standing ovation-

John Sterling as J.R.R. Tolkien:

A brief vision he had of swirling cloud, and in the midst of it towers and battlements, tall as hills, founded upon a mighty mountain-throne above immeasurable pits; great courts and dungeons, eyeless prisons sheer as cliffs, and gaping gates of steel and adamant: and then all passed. Towers fell and mountains slid; walls crumbled and melted, crashing down; vast spires of smoke and spouting steams went billowing up, up, until they toppled like an overwhelming wave, and its wild crest curled and came foaming down upon the land. It was high, it was far, it was gone: a big blow, by Frodo, and the fellowship take the lead.
