ESPN sets ‘Sunday Night Baseball’ lineup, moves Jessica Mendoza to weeknights

CLEVELAND, Ohio—ESPN will not replace Jessica Mendoza for its “Sunday Night Baseball” broadcasts, instead opting for a two-man booth with Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez returning to their roles as play-by-play announcer and analyst, respectively. Buster Onley will also continue to serve as the dugout reporter, the network announced Thursday.

Mendoza, who spent the last four full seasons on “Sunday Night Baseball,” will instead work weeknight games, joining a rotation of analysts that includes former Indians Eduardo Perez and Rick Sutcliffe, along with Tim Kurkjian. Karl Ravech, Jon Sciambi and Dave Flemming will take turns doing play-by-play during the week.

Mendoza will also make regular appearances on “Baseball Tonight,” “SportsCenter,” “Get Up,” and “First Take” as part of her new contract. She becomes the first woman to serve as a solo analyst on nationally televised MLB games. Her expanded role comes after she sparked a bit of controversy in the offseason by criticizing former Astros pitcher Mike Fiers for blowing the lid on the team’s sign-stealing scheme. Mendoza was moonlighting as an advisor to the Mets at the time. Though she tried to walk back her comments, the incident raised concerns over a conflict of interest.

For those curious involving how the Worldwide Leader will cover baseball this year.

I'm good with this... maybe? I mean the Mendoza part I'm fine with, now that she's not with the Mets. She can handle the role capably.

The 3-person booth was awkward, partly because A-Rod was compelled to fill whatever open air was available. I think without the competition for color analysis there's a danger that he'll amp it up more, and Vasgersian and the producers will need to find a way to pull back on the reins.

From what I heard I’d rather they kept Mendoza in the Sunday night slot. Given how little I actually have the sound on when I watch a baseball game it’s a non factor for me.

Has there ever been a good three person booth? You could have Scully, Harwell, and Barber working together and it would be subtraction by addition. I'm happy to give Rodriguez and Mendoza a shot as the color analyst in a two person team, but together they weren't good.

More inane jabbering from Arod. Hooray.

Gary, Keith and Ron for the Mets right now.

Yep, and they are better all three than separate. Ron and Gary can get a little dry, and Keith and Gary can get a little obnoxious. The three keep each other in check, it's a good balance.

Keith without Ron seems to be getting worse over the years. There is a lot of complaining about how the game isn't the same as it was 30 years ago.

What you did there, I see it.

Oh, dlf. Why? Why why why would you punish all of us with this summary dismissal? WHY GOD WHY?

Or, what JJ1986 and Banta said.

Agree.

Considering the changes that have taken place during that time, I'd consider that a feature rather than a bug.

I do like when Boston has both Remy and Eckersley, with Dave O'Brien. Remy is good, Eck is good, and the Remy/Eck combo is better.

People choosing to live in Utica deserve all the punishment they get.

I haven't heard the Boston trio; I'll take vi's word for it. I have heard the Mets' version and worried they'd die of oxygen deprivation as they appeared to use it all up. Silence, to coin a phrase, is golden.

Fair, on both points.

But we like them, so, we don't mind the talking.

Maybe I prefer Remy and Eck filling the void to Dave O'Brien giving us the update on the standings every five minutes.
