ESPN was inadvertently airing PitchCom audio during live Sunday Night Baseball interview

During ESPN’s broadcast featuring the Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles, Boston shortstop Christian Arroyo was mic’d up for a live in-game interview with the Sunday Night Baseball announcing crew. But as the interview was taking place, an automated voice could be heard saying, “four seam fastball up in zone, four seam fastball inside.” On cue, Red Sox pitcher Nick Pivetta brushed Orioles hitter Austin Hays off the plate with a fastball up and in.

PitchCom is supposed to provide a pitcher with the security that their pitch selections are not going to be picked up by the opposition. It’s safe to say ESPN using PitchCom to inadvertently broadcast a team’s pitch selections on national television would be the opposite intent of the communication system. After multiple pitch selections were broadcasted by ESPN, play-by-play voice Karl Ravech acknowledged the potential issue, cluing Arroyo in to what the audience was hearing.

“We have this real interesting, and I don’t know if we’re comfortable with it or not, but you can hear the PitchCom through your microphone,” Ravech admitted.

“Can you?” Arroyo asked. “Oh goodness. Let me turn that down.”

“You have volume? You can turn that down a little bit?” Ravech asked. “I’d be more comfortable not having that go out across the air.”

If a microphone 50-60 feet away can pick up the pitch calls that easily then this may not be quite the panacea for sign stealing that some people think.

I believe it was Arroyo’s own pitch.com receiver that was being picked up while he was mic’d up. SS & 2nd base get them so they can adjust to the pitch.

I'm kind of surprised they don't play Arroyo at 2B and bump Story over to SS. If Story can't play better SS than Arroyo anymore, that was a disaster signing; his defense was at least half the value imho.

I believe at this point that any infielder and the center fielder can all wear them if they choose.

1. Story's injured.
2. Arroyo was playing 2B.

Why not the other outfielders? It's ok for 7 of the 9 guys out there, but not those filthy corner outfielders? Because #### them, right?!

I would ban that way before banning the shift.

Give them all 2-way radios (but only the on-field defensive players)...just imagine the out-takes we'll get out of it with pitchers cursing out a SS who mis-played a ball, or the outfielders grumbling when the pitcher can't find the strike zone...I'd much rather listen to that than most teams' broadcasts.

Yeah, just put the broadcast on a 15 second delay to prevent sign stealing.

In fact let’s just go ahead and give the batter access, but delayed. Way more effective than a pitch clock- If you don’t get your pitch off by the time the broadcast catches up, the batter may get to hear it.

I like the way you think but of course all they'd do is agree "fastball up and in" means "change low and away" or "move up one if I touch my shinguard, down one if I touch my protector" etc.

I caught for a guy in HS who was ultra-paranoid that every team was stealing our signs...to the point where he thought if I called something that he didn't agree with, I was doing it deliberately just to throw the other team off, and he'd say yes to what I called, then throw what he wanted instead.

Luciano had a story in one of his books about a catcher (Fisk I think) telling the hitter what was coming. Then on one pitch it was accurate, the next pitch it wasn't and by the time the at bat was over the hitter's head was swimming.
