Evaluating how Marlins did in Ozuna trade

Three years after moving All-Star outfielder Marcell Ozuna to the Cardinals, the Marlins are liking their return in what was at the time a criticized deal.

In December 2017, Miami acquired right-handers Sandy Alcantara and Zac Gallen, plus left-hander Daniel Castano and outfielder Magneuris Sierra for Ozuna, who is now with the Braves….

The headliner of the Ozuna trade obviously is Alcantara, an All-Star last year and Miami’s Opening Day starter this year.

Alcantara is on the injured list, but in the opener, he was magnificent in a win at the Phillies, giving up one earned run with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.

The Marlins have repeatedly said they feel Alcantara’s pure stuff is on par with the best pitchers in the National League. It’s a matter of consistency. The 24-year-old is showing that he can be a legitimate front-of-the-rotation starter.

To this point, Alcantara has certainly had solid results in his 250 innings (111 ERA+) but his peripherals are terrible. His FIP is 0.85 higher than his ERA, his K/BB ratio is well under 2 and the K-rate is not that impressive. Still, even if he settles in as an average innings-eater, he's got 4 more years of control left after this year and 6 years of that is perfectly good compensation for a player like Ozuna.

Gallen has been the massive surprise and so far this year is showing that last year wasn't a fluke. His peripherals are also a lot worse than his ERA+ but they're still very good and he's striking out nearly 11/9. The "problem" for the Marlins is that he's doing this for the DBacks. The Marlins got Jazz Chisholm who was on the lower half of the prospect lists coming into this season.

Sierra has had a fine 19 PA so far this year, looks to be on track to be a super-2 at the end of next year, there's nothing in his minors performance to suggest he'll ever hit well enough even to be a 4th OF. (But possibly he's learned to take a walk.) Castano appears to be a AAAA SP but you never know.

So that trade is working out fine for the Marlins and might have worked out great if they'd held onto Gallen. Chisholm seems to be on their 60-man roster, maybe even their 40 and he's a reasonable bet to return some value (still just 22). And of course Ozuna is not a world-beater.

Now, that Yelich trade ...
