Any of the other denizens of the Mets' Cuckoo's Nest going to the game tonight? Wanna meet for a beer or a bourbon and toast our success? (/sarcasm)

The Nationals ended their season last night, now 8 games out. If Strasburg can't be STRASBURG against the Braves, all hope is lost. The Max who is dominant right now aint Scherzer, Corbin is just as likely to deliver a clunker as a gem, same for Sánchez, no idea who #5 is this week. The bats must have gotten lost in the Hurricane Dorian shuffle; even Juan Soto struck out 3 times.

These head-to-head series are the Nats' best shot at NL East or Bust; so far it's looking like a bust.

Wait, aren't they still holding the 1st WC slot?

Wait, aren't they still holding the 1st WC slot?

With Stable Genius Deivi Martinez (mis)managing the bullpen, a Wild Card game is one-and-done. Hence, #NLEastOrBust. Not my rules, Nature's rules, Daniel san.
   6. TomH Posted: September 06, 2019 at 01:05 PM (#5877151)
Mad Max won't let Deivi take him out of the WC game if they are tied or better.

OTOH, facing the Dahdgers with Max only being available for one game of 5 is *not* gonna be pretty.

Due up for the Tigers in the bottom of the 7th of their suspended game vs. Oakland on September 6:
7. Josh Harrison (released)
8. Grayson Greiner (60-day DL)
9. JaCoby Jones (out for the season)

Even more curiously, the make-up innings will be played in Oakland with the Tigers as the home team. That resumed game is scheduled to start at 20:15 ET, although just now when I put it up on MLB dot TV it started playing the original broadcast from back in May, which fooled me at first.

James Mirtle @mirtle

The Sharks have hired former LA Dodgers GM Ned Colletti as a scout. That's different.

That's the NHL Sharks, for those unsure. Back in the day, the Yankees hired former Bulls GM Jerry Krause as a scout (he then worked for the Mets, DBacks, and White Sox too) after the MJ years.

Heck, BITD, Steinbrenner hired Lou Saban, former head coach of the Buffalo Bills, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos & Army as team president.

I won't even mention Bo Schembechler...

"Poor managers are going to manage poorly."

Overall, I'm not a fan of Boone's but I think he's done pretty well this year. Still, his lineup construction still leaves a lot to be desired. DJ, Judge, Torres, Sanchez and EE would be my 1-5.

Help is on the way:
Marly Rivera, ESPN Writer

Luis Severino just finished his second rehab outing. He pitched 3+ innings and struck out 5 batters; gave up 1 ER (solo home run) on 5 hits. Yankees manager Aaron Boone said if the outing went well, "there's a chance he can come with us." If Severino keeps to a regular starter 5-day schedule, he could potentially start on Wednesday, September 11, against the Tigers.

Joe might wanna get Hamels out of there if he wants a shot at this game. He's fortunate it's only 4-1 right now.

Yep, Hamels pitching his way out of the playoff rotation -- should we have a need for such a thing.

Aaron Boone's fixation over batting Didi Gregorious third and Gleyber Torres 6th is maddening.

Maybe he's read The Book. :-)

(Even by The Book, I doubt Didi is the best choice for #3 ... I assume it's more about not wanting to get endlessly ROOGy'd anytime they turn the lineup over after the 5th ... which would be by The Book.) For those that don't recall, The Book advised that since the #3 spot has by far the most PA with 2 outs and nobody on (mostly in the 1st obviously) that you want a batter there who generates his own offense (i.e. HRs and maybe doubles). Walks and singles are therefore somewhat wasted unless the guy steals a lot of bases. And of course Ks are even less troubling. Didi doesn't walk, does have good ISO ... doesn't really K much.

MLB completely ignored that bit of advice as near as I can tell but is much more likely to put a very good/best hitter at #2 which they also suggested. I have no idea if Tango and MBL still stand behind their finding on #3 batters.** I also doubt the book would put Torres #6 but, given the insane season Yankees hitters are having up and down the lineup, maybe. But The Book did come down in favor of alternating L/R as much as possible -- back-to-back RHB is generally unavoidable somewhere in the lineup but I'm sure they'd advise against the Yanks having the top 5 all be RHB. As we know, batting order doesn't really matter very much so not punting the late-inning platoon advantage is a good idea.

Hamels last 6 starts: 25.1 IP, 43 H, 25 R, 24 ER, 22 K, 12 BB, 7 HR

I was curious whether Yelich still had those extra crazy H/R splits he had earlier. Well, he's settled down. Still a big split with a 333/430/732 line at home but he's hitting a perfectly respectable 313/407/602 on the road.

Tampa is fcking rolling. They two-hit the Blue Jays tonight.
   24. rconn23 Posted: September 06, 2019 at 09:51 PM (#5877296)
The Yankees put up little effort tonight against the Boston … bullpen. Kind of seems like they are playing out the string and Boone will start really resting guys now. They do need to fight for homefield advantage.

Second time this week a bungled force at second by DeJong that would have ended the inning has led to a deluge of runs.

Without those boners the Cardinals would be looking at a 13-2 run, rather than the 11-4 run it appears they'll end up with..

PHI MGR Kapler starts to make a pitching change vs Mets, forgets to do a double switch with the pitcher leading off top 9 in a 2-2 game, then walks back to the dugout. Neris threw six more pitches in the bullpen after Kapler signaled for him. 2nd base ump had to run almost to the warning track to get Neris's tardy butt into the game. weird.

Alonso then singles, and someone named Haggerty scores to give the Mets the lead. Ramos single makes it 4-2.

and here comes Edwin "White Flag" Diaz in the 9th. what could go wrong? huh, 100 mph heater for a leadoff K.

and with the completion of that OAK-DET game, Castellanos has homered in both AL and NL tonight - you can look it up.

and we have a single and a 2-run, game-tying HR by Realmuto.

Diaz - who continues to look terrified - throws up his hands.

Mets fans, meanwhile, just throw up.

14 HR allowed in 51 IP in 2019. 5 in 73 last year.

credit to the leather-lunged fan who had a well-timed "YOU SUCK!" amid the cacophony of boos.

Intentionally loading the bases seems ill-conceived since Strop doesn't appear to know where the ball is heading. But we shall see.

POLAR BEAR!

bases-loaded walk on a 3-2 pitch for Alonso, and Mets win the damn game 5-4

it's hard for each NL East team (and really most teams) fans to remember that yours is the only bullpen that blows chunks.

Nick Vincent follows up allowing the game-losing HR last night to this more mundane - yet also soul-crushing - defeat.

   51. Howie Menckel Posted: September 07, 2019 at 12:17 AM (#5877343)
Kershaw, lifted in a 1-1 game in the 5th after 99 pitches and showing nothing, angrily kicks a (plastic) water cooler upon reaching the dugout.

and loved to see Pete Alonso post-game on MLB Network. he has literally ripped the shirts of teammates like Conforto and JD Davis who have walk-off hits - so he got his turn tonight.

and there he is - topless and showing off hairy man-boobs on national TV. then they showed a ridiculously-sculpted Yelich photo - who I guess is in the new "ESPN The Body Issue."

"Me and him, we have different body types," Alonso says, unintentionally hilariously.

Mets have set the record for most 9th inning HRs allowed during a season. Diaz has tied K-Rod for the player record as well.
