Ex-Red Sox announcer Don Orsillo says he was uninvited from Jerry Remy tribute

The Boston Red Sox paid tribute Wednesday to their former color commentator, Jerry Remy, but his longtime partner, Don Orsillo, said he was uninvited from the festivities.

“I was offered the opportunity to do a video message for my friend and former partner Jerry Remy for tonight’s ceremony at Fenway Park,” Orsillo tweeted Wednesday evening.

“Sadly, I was notified by Red Sox/NESN that my video would no longer be needed for tonight’s ceremony.

Remy, who also played in MLB for 10 years, died last October at the age of 68 after a lengthy battle with lung cancer.

Chad Finn of the Boston Globe, which shares common ownership with the Red Sox, reported the timeline of events and concluded that it “sounds more like a case of miscommunication than an intended slight.”

The Red Sox apparently invited Orsillo to attend the ceremony in person, but he could not as he was working a Padres game in San Diego. The team presented him with the opportunity to send a video, which he accepted. However, the team’s planning of the ceremony changed, and they did not have any speakers — either in person or by video.

Great. Now what are we supposed to do with our outrage?

Wait, I'm confused. Fenway sports is worth like $8 billion, they couldn't afford any speakers? Also, they still do announcements over the PA system at the game right? What about those speakers?

On another note, Orsillo was really good, too bad they decided to move on a few years back.

The excerpt in #1 doesn’t really explain why the Red Sox would invite Orsillo to participate, in person & then via video, but subsequently decide to not have any speakers. A bit odd.

Maybe Lou Merloni wanted to talk and it was safer to just cancel the whole thing than to let him speak.

An excerpt that doesn't fully explain something is odd? Your concern is noted.

Anyone outraged by a NY Post headline deserves the elevated blood pressure that comes with that outrage.

Well, they had speakers - former broadcast partner Sean McDonough and (somewhat randomly, considering all the other former teammates who were there) Bob Stanley, and maybe one more? I do think they should have found a way to include Orsillo - if he didn't have the longest tenure as Remy's partner, he was second only to the late Ned Martin and they were the voice of the team for the best stretch any living fan can remember - so there's that. I suspect that as they were planning it out, they probably wondered about the way that message would play versus the guys who were there in person, with everybody on the field reacting to each other, more than how it might be second-guessed.

Anyway, it was a nice little ceremony as broadcast, if surprisingly short (15 minutes or so), but I like to imagine all the family members and former on-field and on-air teammates who showed up had a good time reminiscing at the bar afterward.

Was Stanley maybe Remy’s roommate back in the day?

Dates line up well enough, and it sounds like something Remy has mentioned on-air. Like I said, without anyone saying why, it seems random.

Mildly surprised Fisk wasn't there, but who knows, maybe they weren't particularly close.

Was there another, Remy-specific ceremony? What I saw was an Oscars-style video tribute to all of the Red Sox alums who had passed on in the past year, like Corsi, Lugo, etc..., with Remy as the crescendo (including some footage with Orsillo -- it's not like they removed him from history). Maybe I missed the speakers, but it seems like it would've been an awkward fit given the format.

9 - Fisk is a bit of a homebody. Getting him out is roughly on par with getting Yaz out.

10 - The Oscar-style video sounds like the one they ran on Opening Day (both in Fort Myers and in Boston). On Wednesday this week they did a special ceremony for Jerry, his wife showed up, much more in depth ceremony before the game.

Ahhh gotcha, thanks. Yes I only saw the Opening Day thing.

I'm really confused by the claim that they didn't have any speakers. Who is the source of that? Kevin McCarthy? Tom Caron spoke, mentioning his time working with Remy. And as stated above, Stanley and McDonough spoke. I think they should have had Orsillo as a speaker, if not live than via video. His omission is unseemly.

The excerpt in #1 is goofy.

Here is how it was written up elsewhere:

The Red Sox’ explanation? The suggestion of sending a video came before the ceremony had entirely been planned. Ultimately, the decision was made not to use any videos of speakers at all.

The Post makes it sound like "company shill provides excuse". Because we all know the Boston Globe has long been a bastion of favorable press coverage of the Red Sox.

ha ha!

Don Orsillo likes the drama.

Both are acceptable, but I have always preferred "disinvite" to "uninvite."
