Ex-White Sox Manager Ozzie Guillen Still Really, Really Hates ‘Fake’ Nick Swisher

Guillen is now an analyst for NBC Sports Chicago, working on the network’s White Sox postgame show. On Wednesday night, host Chuck Garfien teed up Guillen with a doozy of a prompt: “Who did you dislike more? Carlos Gomez or Nick Swisher?” And Guillen did not hold back.

“Oh my god,” Guillen replied. “Nick—nobody can compare that with Nick Swisher. I hate Nick Swisher with my heart.”

Guillen called Swisher “fake” and said his one season in Chicago was “one year too long.”

Swisher’s 2008 season with the Sox was a total mess. He was traded from Oakland to Chicago before the season in exchange for Gio González (then a promising prospect) and Ryan Sweeney (who would go on to be an everyday player for the A’s). He started the season as the White Sox’ leadoff hitter but by the end of May was hitting mostly in the seventh and eighth spots, even as low as ninth, as his batting average hovered around .200. He wasn’t any better in the field. Swisher, who played mostly right field for the A’s, was deployed in center by Guillen, where he was worth a whopping -11 defensive runs saved in just 70 games.

I was hoping he would answer "AJ Pierzynksi," but alas. Perhaps "hate" is too mild a word for AJ.

Maybe Ozzie’s managing was the problem? Swisher put up 4.4 WAR in his last year in Oakland before coming to Chicago, and averaged ~ 3 WAR per year in his 4 seasons with the Yankees after the White Sox traded him.

Ozzie's pure hatred is one of the few endearing qualities about him.

Nick Swisher played 12 seasons in the majors, more than 1500 games. In all that time, managers submitted lineup cards putting him in CF 125 times. More than half of those were Ozzie Guillen in 2008. But yeah, Swisher's fault.

Ozzie put him in CF to start a game 69 times (70 games overall) and got a -11 defensive runs saved performance.
The year before, the A's put him in CF to start a game 56 times (59 games overall) and got a +1 defensive runs saved performance.

Yes, it's Ozzie who put him out there for the White Sox, but it's not like this was some crazy move by him given Swisher's recent history.

The 2008 Sox had Thome at DH, Konerko at first, 34-year-old Jermaine Dye in right, the not very mobile Carlos Quentin in left and 38-year-old Ken Griffey on the bench. Swisher was almost certainly the Sox best option in CF.

Interestingly, though he didn't hit for #### that season, it can't be blamed on playing CF. He it much better when he was in center than anywhere else he was deployed.

He was a fan favorite coming out of Spring Training that year. But boy, that didn't last long.

The Sox haven’t made the playoffs since they got rid of Swisher. This is one of the saddest curses in their history.

What's the point of describing one's hate for someone who worked for you 15 years ago? Does Nick Swisher follow him around, cursing at him? I guess he never wants a job in baseball again. Be nice to people on your way to the top. You meet the same people on your way back down to the bottom.

Ozzie is, and always has been, a classless jackass. This is not new.

I'm more perplexed by the question than the answer or the man giving the answer. It seems like an inappropriate question, and I also can't imagine a way that the Swisher-Guillen relationship from so long ago fits into a post-game show today such that it elicited a question like that.

Sounds like Ozzie should be pissed at the GM, not the miscast CF.

If Ozzie's reason for disliking Nick Swisher was because he was miscast as a centerfielder, you'd be spot on.

Or you could say it's not like they had a need for Swisher and if the GM realized that Ozzie's delicate sensibilities would have been spared. Then again, it sounds like Ozzie enjoys some hatin'.

I assume they thought Anderson would hit enough to play the position, but Williams obviously stockpiled too many corners that year.

And Ozzie's feelings toward Swisher were not his alone. For whatever reason, Nick wore out his welcome in the Sox clubhouse pretty quickly.

Then again, it sounds like Ozzie enjoys some hatin'.

No question about that. He was the stiggles of MLB.

AJ & Guillen are two guys I disliked as players & in Ozzie's case player & manager but actually liked as a commentator

I was always a fan of Swisher in Oakland. I have fond memories of his 35 HRs during the A's 2006 season in which they made the playoffs. Swisher slumped in Chicago but then fit in with the Yankees until the fans turned on him after Jeter got hurt.

Ozzie's comment on A.J. remains one of my favorite managerial lines.

"If you play against him, you hate him. If you play with him, you hate him a little less."
