Ex-MLB player finishes medical school, primes to fight virus

NEW YORK (AP) — If he wanted, Mark Hamilton could show off his World Series ring at work.

But the fill-in first baseman for the 2011 champion St. Louis Cardinals prefers to keep that prize safe at home.

“The surgical scrub tub, not the most conducive place to wear it,” Hamilton said.

On Friday, under an accelerated schedule prompted by dire circumstances, the former big leaguer is set to graduate a month early from medical school on Long Island.

He mentions feeling kind of weird about his world series ring, because he wasn't on the postseason roster and wasn't in the stadium when it happened. I always wonder a bit about that- it has to feel kind of bittersweet.

If that was me, all my patients would get tired of my story about how Albert Pujols would have been too tired to be Albert Pujols! without my covering for him earlier in the year. The last thing they would see before they went under would be me putting the ring on over my glove.

I don’t know if his weird feelings would have been lessened if MLB had something like the NHL thing where only certain people get their names on the Stanley Cup, but most of not all the players for that season get championship rings.

Ray Kinsella:
Fifty years ago, for five minutes you came within... y-you came this close. It would KILL some men to get so close to their dream and not touch it. God, they'd consider it a tragedy.

Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham:
Son, if I'd only gotten to be a doctor for five minutes... now that would have been a tragedy.

I wonder how Bengie Molina feels about his 2010 World Series ring. He played in the World Series for the Rangers, and lost - but because he spent the first half of the season with the Giants, he got a ring. But it must have felt so weird to get a winner's ring for a Series that your team lost...

Sort of makes me think of teams with no hall of famers (a subject that interest me) and how a few only count because of injured/off the roster players who got rings (eg Frank Thomas 2005). Does he wear that ring? He's on TV a lot, do people see a ring there?

as someone that's spent the past three months watching the same nugenix commercial on pluto.tv, he wears A ring, but it looks to me more a wedding ring than a world series ring.

I dunno, a World Series ring might look like a wedding ring on a guy the size of (current) Frank Thomas.
