Facts refute claims Cardinals got COVID-19 at casino

The team has vehemently denied that they have any evidence of the players breaking from protocols while on the road trip. Major League Baseball has concurred with this view, according to two sources outside of the Cardinals organization.

“I have no factual reason to believe that is true and I have not seen any proof of that,” said John Mozeliak, president of baseball operations, when asked directly by the Post-Dispatch about the casino report. “If they were at a casino though, that would be disappointing.”

Cardinals manager Mike Shildt said Wednesday that the team has traced the genesis of the outbreak back to an outside individual who was asymptomatic when he had contact with a member of the club. “Brought it into our clubhouse,” Shildt said. From there, the virus spread through practices that the Cardinals have also internally addressed.

okay, they should have their chips given back to them.

I don't know if that's better or worse. Better for the players in question if they didn't break the rules, I guess. But probably worse for MLB if they followed protocols and still had an outbreak among the team.

Meh. This reminds me a bit of even the national news outlet stories of "I DID NOTHING WRONG AND I STILL GOT COVID". I guess I'm jaded, but my first reaction is never "GOOD LORD WE'RE DOOMED", but "No, you just forgot something or are embellishing or are outright lying." I mean, they don't have cameras on all the players at all times.

In 2020 they kind of do though. I don't like casinos so maybe I'm wrong but I assume that if a group of MLB players were in a casino that there would be an instagram or twitter post with a photo of that player.

- shrug - I get the "we're on all camera all the time" thing, but not everyone on the team is going to a casino. It just seems likely with that many people, someone can screw up without being seen. But, I'm not living the life, so maybe I'm wrong.

Casinos wouldn’t need a random customer taking a pic and putting on social media. They’ve got cameras set up everywhere recording everything that goes on in the floor.

People want this disease to be "if A, then B" and very few things in medicine work that way. The guy who started the jogging craze dropped dead jogging. It's all about trying to tweak probabilities - kinda like baseball.

If one RTFA, they'll see that due to COVID, people need reservations to use that casino, and need to check in when they arrive. There's a record of who has been there.

For MLB, I think having this NOT tied to a casino is worse. The major takeaway from the MLB season so far is that one person in an organization getting it can spread very easily to a double-digit number of people in the organization getting it (18 Marlins, 13 Cardinals I believe). In which case, the only way this thing works is if teams can keep the virus out entirely. If the only ways that the virus is getting in are via strip clubs and casinos, that's a fixable problem for MLB. If the virus is getting in via "an outside individual who was asymptomatic when he had contact with a member of the club", then the MLB season is probably doomed.

Yes, but are they sharing that footage with reporters? I'm assuming they keep that stuff private and even law enforcement probably needs a warrant to see it.

Same with the reservation list.

MLB tightens coronavirus rules, requiring masks in dugouts and compliance officers

After coronavirus outbreaks forced Major League Baseball to postpone 21 games over the first two weeks of its season, it is strengthening its protocols, including requiring players and staff to wear face coverings at all times, except for players on the field of play.

Teams were informed of the changes in a memo obtained by the Associated Press, which said teams were told that repeated or flagrant violations could cause a team to be banned for the rest of the 2020 season and/or postseason.

The guy who started the jogging craze dropped dead jogging.

Pete Maravich, in a 1974 interview, said: “I don't want to play 10 years in the NBA and die of a heart attack at age 40.”

He did, and he did.

As #7 notes (and I'm sure everybody here knows), unless you have literally zero contact with other people (and don't eat infected wild game), your risk is never zero. We do have many examples now where it seems quite clear this thing is highly contagious in indoor settings with longer-term exposure and maybe not the best ventilation. Cruise ships, meatpacking plants, nursing homes. There was that story recently about the youth summer camp where something like 75% tested positive. We have some small outbreaks in Sydney mostly linked to restaurants and pubs ... resulting in publich health warnings/requests along the lines of "if you were at this place between 7 and 10 pm on these dates, get tested." We're talking maybe 50 people dining, tables at least at reasonable social distance ... and maybe a dozen get infected (then take it home, etc).

Dugouts, bullpens, clubhouses, team buses and planes, hotel bars, workout rooms are all (in normal operation) those sorts of places, some riskier than others. They're aware of that of course and so those (hopefully) aren't operating as normal but that doesn't mean they've found the best ways to minimize the risk.

in most US casinos, you aren't allowed to take photos - even with your iPhone.

now, if you do and you get caught, you should be fine if you do a brief variation on the George Costanza "was that wrong? because if I had known..."

don't ask me how I know this.

but yes if your photo on social media went viral, the casinos would be likely to attempt to find you and take your children away - or, in a lesser case, just your casino loyalty card.

I’m pretty bad at noticing celebrities out in public, but I don’t know that I’d recognize a single member of the Cardinals if I saw them at a casino in street clothes. Maybe Yadier Molina, but that’s probably it.

Well sometime they wear their full uniform while out.

Cardinals I would probably recognize in street clothes (short sleeves for tattoo visibility would help in a couple cases):

Molina
Fowler
Goldschmidt
Wainwright
Wong
Carpenter
Martinez
Miller (maybe)
Brebbia before he shaved the beard

What? This is 100% not true.

visit your local casino, take our your phone and start shooting lots of photos, and make sure security sees you.

then come back to us with your answer. warning: this one might sting, because you left yourself with 0% margin for error.

(one of life's greatest lessons, btw, is never trust anyone who is "100%" on anything. it's uncanny how often they are wrong.)

now, if you win a jackpot and a friend is clearly just taking a photo of you alone alongside the slot machine - it's likely they will let you slide on their rule. same if you are at an anniversary dinner in a restaurant and ask the waitress to take a photo of you.

but if you see someone at a table game like - oh, a Cardinal - and you start taking photos, you will quickly learn something. and that's the point of this whole discussion.

class is now dismissed.
