Felipe Alou: Mets manager Luis Rojas won’t cheat baseball

Rest assured, Mets fans, new manager Luis Rojas is a good man who will not cheat the game of baseball.

Those strong words come from his father, Felipe Alou, in his first comments about Rojas becoming Mets manager at the age of 38. Alou managed 14 years in the majors after a 17-year playing career. He is an icon in the game./blockquote>

So, can anyone explain why he goes by "Rojas" , not "Alou"? Felipe appears to be his biological father. ESPN's article has this confusing section:

He was born Luis Rojas Alou, and he went by Alou -- the surname of his paternal grandmother -- when he started in Baltimore in 2000. At some point while he was with Florida (2001-02) or Montreal/Washington (2003-05), he was asked to change his name to Rojas as part of Major League Baseball's push to conform names with birth certificates.

short version is that the error was made when Felipe arrived here 60 years ago.

little understanding here back then of Hispanic culture use of maternal AND paternal surnames (Felipe was the first MLB star from the Dominican Republic - but not nearly the last, obviously).

NY press says the Mets MGR made his own decision to turn his last name back to what it should have been all along.

MGR is the brother of Moises Alou, son of Felipe, and nephew of Matty and Jesus Alou.

his cousin is ex-MLB reliever Mel Rojas. (but I will stand to be corrected on these connections.)

There was a 1980s-1990s women's tennis star named Arantxa Sanchez who one day became Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, and not because she got married. it was to go back to similar family roots.

[2] Howie, I’m going to have to ask you for a more thorough answer.

Thanks, Howie. I suspected the Hispanic cultural connection, but that passage from ESPN greatly confused me and my cursory search into Luis didn't yield who his mother is/was.

Howie nailed it.

Felipe Alou's birth name is Felipe Rojas Alou. Rojas is his father's surname. Alou is his mother's surname.

To an American with no understanding of Spanish naming conventions, his name would appear to be Felipe (first name), Rojas (middle name) and Alou (last name). But in fact Rojas is his father's family name, thus Felipe Rojas would be the equivalent American naming convention.

Felipe Alou is a guy who would make some sense as one of those random committee HOF selections. He's got a lot of "story of baseball" stuff going for him.

“To me there are two things in this world, there’s life and there’s baseball, and one helps you get through the other.” — Jerry Seinfeld, who said this tonight at the @NYBBWAA dinner. I kinda think it’s the most profound thing I’ve ever heard.
