This is as good a place as any to post this: I am moving and have the early 80's Bill James books and about 20+ years of Baseball Prospectus' that I will toss if no one wants them. They can be picked up in mid- Westchester county NY. Let me know if you want them.

2 HR day for the Nationals Andrew Stevenson against Jacob deGrom, the 2nd an inside-the-perk blast off the tip of left fielder Dominic Smith’s glove, who then face-planted into the wall and didn’t get up until the play was over. 3-3 in 5th.
   4. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 26, 2020 at 05:07 PM (#5979009)
D.J. LeMahieu had another 4-hit game for the Yankees this afternoon, raising his League leading batting average to .359, and putting some distance between him and runner-up Tim Anderson who’s at .337 going into his game tonight.

Luke Voit had a HR, giving him 22, which may be enough to also lead the League. Yankees beat the Marlins 11-4.
   5. Walt Davis Posted: September 26, 2020 at 05:41 PM (#5979013)
Anderson was hitting 377 just 10 days ago. Since then 6-37 with 0 BB but 2 HR.

Some leaders in the clubhouse:

WAR -- Betts 3.3, certainly no batter will catch him, if Bieber or Ryu have a start left they might but I'd assume they'll rest for the playoffs anyway.

dWAR -- Arenado 1.7, this is just an amazing number for his 48 games ... he's on pace for +45-50 by DRS. Statcast is much less impressed -- he leads the majors (IF) at +6 but not substantially better than Lindor or Tatis.

Soto winning the MLB saber triple crown but barring the greatest weekend in MLB history (I'm not ruling it out!), no shot at the trad triple crown.

Kyle Tucker of Hou has hit 6 triples, that's a good number for so few PA.

Abreu leads in TB and RBI. Harper leads in BBs with 48 but a surprise (to me) in 2nd is Carlos Santana with 46. Could be an exciting last weekend!

Miguel Sano leads with 88 Ks. That's a 44% K-rate. He's still got a 105 OPS+. He's hitting 394/936 on contact.

Adalberto Mondesi is leading in SBs by 10 with a healthy 24. I would never have guessed that Trevor Story is 2nd.

For crying out loud, Willson Contreras has been hit by a pitch 14 times ... and that's not counting ones from Craig Kimbrel!

Tatis leads in the all-important power-speed #

Pitchers are of course boring but Bieber leads in ERA at 1.63, he and Darvish are tied with 8 wins (lots at 7), Max Fried is 7-0, Maeda has a WHIP of just 0.75, Bieber leads with 14 K/9 and Brad Hand is building his HoF case with 15 saves. Poor Luke Weaver (AZ) is 1-8; Trevor Williams (Pit) is 2-8. Mets fans can hang their hats on deGrom's league-leading 1.99 FIP.
   7. Walt Davis Posted: September 26, 2020 at 08:01 PM (#5979030)
So we were discussing Simmons' odd decision to opt out of the last 5 days. Today the Giants DFA'd Samardzija 2 days before the end of his contract. That's just as cold.

Lester is finished.
   9. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: September 26, 2020 at 08:53 PM (#5979035)
Pretty sure Lester could have been left to #### the bed like that. This Cub pen is the drizzling shits.

the drizzling shits.
I saw them at CBGB in ‘77. They were awesome!

Walks are NOT clogging up the bases tonight.
   12. cardsfanboy Posted: September 26, 2020 at 09:51 PM (#5979048)
I don't understand if the Cardinals are in the playoffs or not... I mean I kinda do, if they win today (not likely) or tomorrow they are in the playoffs. But if they lose both games, then they will be forced to play a doubleheader against the Tigers....

Just seems a bit weird...
   13. Random Transaction Generator Posted: September 26, 2020 at 10:12 PM (#5979055)
Jays won, so they still have a chance of stealing the #5 seed from the Yankees. A Jays win and a Yankees loss on Sunday and they flip positions (#8 and #5).
   14. Walt Davis Posted: September 27, 2020 at 12:02 AM (#5979091)
If they lose to the Brewers tomorrow, the Brewers will be 30-30 and the Cards 29-29. The Reds are already 30-29 so they will either be 31-29 or 30-30 as well. I have no idea who would win those tie-breakers. Now that it's worked out this way, I could see that (if the Reds win) it might make more sense to have the Cards & Brewers play a one-game play-in rather than the Cards play 2 against the Tigers but MLB decided they wouldn't do that this year. If the Cards on the wrong end of the tie-breaker vs the Brewers (and Reds?) then you want them to play 2 against Det. I see not MLB.com's standings say the Reds have clinched ... so I assume that if the Brewers win tomorrow then the Cards would be on the wrong side of the tiebreaker.

Note, that's how it would work in a normal season if somehow the Cards were two games short of the full 162. The weird part is that a split with the Tigers won't trigger a play-in game this time.
   15. Walt Davis Posted: September 27, 2020 at 12:13 AM (#5979092)
OK, there is one thing definitely weird about it. The Cards 29-28 are currently "ahead" of the Reds by .001 WP but the Reds have clinched.

Seems that can happen in a regular season too. Possibly a wild-card battle where a team is 89-73, barely trailing in WP a 88-72 team while the third team in the mix for the 2 WC spots is at 88-74. The team with 89 wins has a WC spot clinched but the 88-72 team does not.
   16. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 27, 2020 at 12:19 AM (#5979093)
Oh, man. It happened to Jo Adell again. He’s got to be the first player to create two home runs off his glove in the same year. Poor guy.

#14

CIN is in because the only tie-breaker that can happen with a 4-way tie for 30 wins (STL, CIN, MIL, and SF) goes in their favour.

CIN has a 21-19 intradivisional record.
MIL would be 20-20 (if they win).
STL would be 21-19 (if they lose and then win both against DET).
SF would be 19-21 (if they beat SDP today).

SF can only make the playoffs if
- MIL wins, STL loses both against DET, and SF wins
- MIL loses, SF wins

PHI can only make the playoffs if
- MIL wins, SF loses, STL loses both against DET
- MIL loses, SF loses

I don’t think that’s right

Per ESPN
• If they (St. Louis) lose and the Giants lose: No. 8 seed

St. Louis losing puts Milwaukee ahead of Phillies
   20. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: September 27, 2020 at 03:16 PM (#5979156)
Billy Hamilton and Cameron Maybin at the top of the Cubs’ lineup today - is Ross paying tribute to Dusty?
   21. JJ1986 Posted: September 27, 2020 at 04:23 PM (#5979161)
Is it right that Milwaukee holds the tiebreaker over SF if they both end up with 29 wins?
   22. Red Voodooin Posted: September 27, 2020 at 04:41 PM (#5979163)
Yes, Milwaukee is in with a win (or a loss and a loss by both SF and PHI). SF is in if MIL loses and they win.

They are all losing right now. Brewers are down 4-1 to the Cardinals, Phillies down 3-0 to Tampa and the Giants are down 2-1 to the Padres.
   23. The Yankee Clapper Posted: September 27, 2020 at 05:02 PM (#5979168)
Looks like the Nationals may be able to take some solace by consigning the Mets to last place in the NL East today. Leading 12-4 in the 5th, and a victory would tie the teams at 26-34, but Washington holds the all important tie-breaker - a win today would give them a 6-4 edge in head-to-head competition.

I'm not sure what thread to say this in, but I'm really glad we got to have baseball this year. There were a lot of compromises, but my year got a lot more enjoyable once summer camp started up again.
   25. Where have you gone Brady Anderson? Posted: September 27, 2020 at 05:36 PM (#5979173)
One thing I've liked about this year was the earlier start times. Lots of 6 PM games where I could listen to the whole game without having to stay up late. One other note about this year is how little I've cared about interleague play. Normally, I try to avoid listening to interleague games, since they are an abomination. This year, I usually haven't even noticed, it just feels like we have three divisions (East, Central, and West).
   26. Red Voodooin Posted: September 27, 2020 at 05:38 PM (#5979174)
Big cosign for #24.

It appears that nobody wants that final NL playoff spot, so the Brewers may backdoor their way into it.

Giants trying to make things interesting. They've cut the lead to 5-4, bottom 8.

Brewers down to their last out, down four. If the Giants can rally, their season continues.
   31. phredbird Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:11 PM (#5979181)

well ... you always see something new.

i just saw my first live triple play. basic TP ... cardinals with men on 1st and 2nd and yadier molina at the plate. he hits a hot smash right to the 3b who was just off the line, he steps on 3rd, throws to 2nd. yadi was barely half way up the line by the time the ball got to first. he knew right away what he had done.

good thing we're up 4 in the ninth, otherwise i'd really be upset.
   32. Walt Davis Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:12 PM (#5979183)
The Marlins have made the playoffs with a -40ish run differential (still playing). I wonder what the record is.
   33. phredbird Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:13 PM (#5979184)

cards 1 out away from meeting SD (probably?) in the first round.
   34. JJ1986 Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:13 PM (#5979185)
Cardinals win and they are in. Giants or Brewers depends on the SF game.
   35. Red Voodooin Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:13 PM (#5979186)
Cardinals beat the Brewers. It all comes down to the Giants.

The Marlins have made the playoffs with a -40ish run differential (still playing). I wonder what the record is.

The Cubs get a break by getting to play the Marlins (rather than the Reds).

But of course, history dictates that the Marlins will win the World Series.

mother-father.

what the he//?

brewers score a run ...

but wong makes a great play on a dribbler and CARDS WIN!!11!!!!!

SEE YOU IN THE PLAYOFFS!

Bottom of the 9th in San Francisco, Giants down a run. The seasons of the Giants and the Brewers hang in the balance.
   41. Red Voodooin Posted: September 27, 2020 at 06:30 PM (#5979193)
Giants lose. The much-maligned NL Central will be placing four teams into the playoffs.

The Phils go down in desultory fashion. 5-0. Ace Aaron Nola only lasts 3.2 innings. He lost his command late in September.

I don’t get the love for Joe Girardi, Manager. I did not see a team that had a fire lit under them. He’s no better or worse than goofy Gabe Kapler. As I said last year, the main problem with the team is not the manager, but the front office. Get MacPhail and Klentak out of there. If you want to dump Girardi, fine, if you want to keep him, I won’t fuss.

Four times that jerk calls strikes on balls WAY out of the zone. And the Giants don't make it.
Embarrassing MLB, total embarrassment ! Fix that crap !

Bring on the Marlins!

Pretty impressive that after missing 15 games, or whatever it was, Cardinals were able to come back and wind up playing 58 out of 60.

They played 53 games in 44 days, with two days off in there as well.

BREWERS: WE FINISHED A CLOSE FOURTH!

The Braves broadcasters have been pushing the notion that this season's champion is equally legitimate as any other. For the most part, I agree. But if the fourth place, sub-.500 Brewers wind up winning, that is not legitimate.

So many firsts and things were about to happen in 1994, darn it!

As for a legitimate champion this year, agreed if the Brewers win it all, it deserves an asterisk. Or really anyone from the NL Central. Or the Jays. Or the White Sox. Etc.

But although baseball is subject to the most randomness in the pro sports, the ongoing hockey situation may be instructive? Over there none of the bottom teams who made the playoffs in the expanded format went on to win diddly squat. And ultimately winning several best-of-seven series is necessary, and many players have said that it has been even harder this year with bubble/hotel living, lack of travel (change of scenery) and limited family/friends/fan contact.

The Braves broadcasters have been pushing the notion that this season's champion is equally legitimate as any other.

If people recognize the 1981 Los Angeles Dodgers World Series championship as legitimate (after making expanded playoffs because of their performance in just ~60 games), then the 2020 winner deserves the same respect.

I honestly can't remember seeing a team get screwed on ball/strike calls to the extent the Giants did tonight. At least 4 extremely high leverage at bats ended in called strikes that were clearly not. 2 of them to Austin Slater, the latter ending the game. I don't know how he didn't turn around and charge the umpire. Their season ended on two consecutive called strikes out of the zone. How can you not feel cheated?

By finishing under .500, in third place, fourteen games back in a 60 game season. No cheats necessary - they don't deserve to move on, period.
