Finnish baseball player flies headfirst into river while chasing ball

No, this isn’t faked — as much as you might want to believe it is. This clip comes to us from the “Superpesis,” the championship series of “Pesäpallo,” which is a Scandanavian variant of baseball. Playing in perhaps the worst conceived sporting arena ever, the Saarikenttä or “island stadium” is surrounded on four sides by a river, and can only be accessed by crossing a bridge.

This leads to a lot of unique moments, as one can imagine. Unlike baseball there’s no equivalent of a ground rule double in Pesäpallo, which means a ball hit into the river (which occurs fairly often) is still live. With players needing to wade through actual flowing water to get the ball and throw it back on the field it’s generally accepted that a river shot results in a home run. That doesn’t stop players throwing themselves into the water to get the ball, as this montage of iconic river shots from 2015 shows.

The Jomboy breakdown is hilarious (NSFW, language).

If you have a family reunion at a really crummy grove, but for some reason people insist on going back every year, this is about what the softball game ends up looking like.

I've seen this sport before, so to me, the only weird thing is that the batter is hitting cross-handed.

Does the pitcher intend to deceive the batter? If so, how might that work? And if not, why not just use a batting tee?

My father and I were on vacation together in 1994 and were in Helsinki for a few days (traditional father-son bonding spot! Dad wanted to travel after my mom died and he let me set the itinerary). We watched highlights of this sport in our hotel room for an hour and couldn't figure out the rules. The next day there was some sort of open air market we went to and someone was selling pesapallo merch and they explained a bit of it to us. We still were baffled.

It is very nice of the Finns that nearly all of them speak English because their language is really hard to pick up. Cognates are hard to come by.

But...he didn't fly headfirst into the river! Damn sensationalistic headlines!

I want to know how Jomboy got to be as big as he now is. It strikes me that not long ago (like, at the beginning of the pandemic) he was a guy who had this funny idea to do these 2-4 minute funny reviews of interesting baseball plays, sort of a TikTok spin on Super 70s Sports Guy's stuff on Twitter. Now, a few years later, he appears to have a made a career out of it (good for him).

Am I reading this right? Have others followed Jomboy Media like this?

I think early on he would lipread umpire arguments and hockey players chirping at each other. He still does that pretty well.

This is what happens once you start tampering with Abner Doubleday’s handiwork. It won’t stop with pitch clocks & ‘pie slices’. Beware!

The "flies headfirst" thing is referring to the first video in the article, not to the video posted here along with the link.

That was mildly entertaining. Maybe MLB should convert the warning track into a moat?
