Fire extinguisher set off by Newcomb’s meltdown

MIAMI—The mess in the Atlanta Braves’ clubhouse made by a punctured fire extinguisher has been cleaned up before Sunday’s series finale at Miami.

The damage occurred when Braves reliever Sean Newcomb kicked a garbage can in anger after giving up the winning run in the 10th inning of Saturday night’s ugly 7-6 loss to the Marlins.

To make matters worse, now they’ll be utterly unprepared if there actually is a fire….

I am sure there are plenty of jokes available about poor relief appearances and fires, involving the Braves these days.

In 5 appearances for the Braves, in 4 innings, Shane Greene as given up 11 hits, 2 HRs, and walked 2. I get regression to the mean, but did he have to do it all in one week? That is a remarkably bad stretch in which he does not have even close to a 1,2 3 inning. Newcomb is mad, but at least Newcomb can get people out on occasion. It should have been Mike Soroka, who pitched 7 innings of shut-out baseball, had his team score 6 runs, and not get the win, that should have been throwing things.

The Braves got Chris Martin, Shane Greene, and Mark Melancon at the deadline. Martin's scoreless inning last night brought their collective line down to a 10.50 ERA and 2.250 WHIP in 12 innings.

They brought in these three closer-ish guys with the idea of not having to rely on Luke Jackson in the ninth inning anymore. They've been such complete turds that Jackson was back out as the closer last night.

Trying to hold onto second in saves so picked up Melancon because maybe in his limited innings he grabs some saves everyone's happy, right? No the clown blows up my ERA, etc so thanks a ####### lot Melancon.
