Fixing the All-Time MVP List

“Yes, Mays was the best player in his league just about every year from 1954–1966; but you’re not a victim of outright theft when the MVP goes to guys like Koufax, Robinson, Aaron, and Banks. That said, you are a victim when you see the likes of Maury Wills (1962) and Ken Boyer (1964) claim an award that should rightfully be yours. The fleet-footed Wills could’ve stolen 200 bases that year and not been as valuable as Mays.”

1 - 1974 Mike Schmidt 6th

I didn't realize Mike Marshall finished 3rd that season. (That was his 106 G / 208 inning season.) I guess people couldn't help but notice what a crazy year that was.

It also meant Marshall was reasonably close to an every day player. In 1975, Gossage was 2nd in AL WAR (8.2) to Palmer's 8.4 (that includes position players led by Carew's 7.6). Palmer finished 6th in MVP while Gossage finished 6th in CYA and 17th in MVP. Lynn won RoY and MVP at 7.4 WAR; Carew got 9th .... and Rollie Fingers got 4th in MVP on 2.2 WAR (fewer IP, fewer saves, much higher ERA than Gossage). Crazy year.

Using the list in #1 I took the amount of their WAR lead and multiplied it by how many spots away from #1 they were to determine the most screwed.

Gooden -- 10.2
Clemens -- 20.7
Mays -- 10.5 + 1.8 + 3.0 +1 = 16.3
Ripken -- 36.4
Seaver -- 9.1
Gibson -- 37.2

The methodology might need some work. :-)

Obviously I should know about Ripken's 1984 ... WTF was that? The defending MVP puts up a 10 WAR season and finishes 27th? It's easy to see why it wouldn't win (no black ink, <100 RBI, O's mediocre, a lot of the WAR was defense, Tigers dominated from day one) but overlooked entirely? Murray and Boddicker (a pitcher!) finished ahead of him. Juan Beniquez finished ahead of him in just 382 PA. The most overlooked 10-WAR season ever?
