From yesterday's omnichatter:

I think MIL needs to win the (rest of the) series 3-1 to make it likely that STL would need to play Monday (2 makeup games with DET).

If they split 2-2, then STL will have 30 wins overall and 22 division wins. So even without playing Monday, they'd already be guaranteed to finish ahead of any of MIA, CIN, SFG, and PHI if those teams finish with 30 wins or fewer (STL would have a better divisional record than any of those teams, and already won the head-to-head season series with CIN). STL only needs to play Monday in this scenario if all 4 of MIA, CIN, SFG, and PHI reach 31+ wins, which seems unlikely (PHI would have to win out to do that, for example).

If MIL wins (the rest of the series) 3-1, then MIL would be 30-30 and STL 29-29 -- and MIA (who has 29 wins already, with 3 to play) would hold the head-to-head tiebreaker with STL (based on last 20 divisional games). If two of CIN, SFG, and PHI wind up at 30 wins, then STL may need to play Monday to resolve that.

Brewers up 2-0 early, in the quest for making the Cardinals and Tigers play on Monday. :)

Boone has been tossed once before this season and it was his 11th career ejection. #Yankees

I have a feeling this was a combination of a bad call and Boone looking for something -- anything -- to spark his team.

(Marlins got a 3-run bomb from Garrett Cooper in the 1st inning)

Judge called out on an ankle high ‘strike’. Boone tossed for verbally noting same, in some fashion.

Boone looking for something -- anything -- to spark his team.
The idea that a manager's ejection will cause an improvement in his team's performance because they're suddenly more motivated is one of the more ridiculous assertions that reporters and broadcasters keep trotting out.

in my years of experience and observation, NBA coaches getting tossed mid-game and NHL coaches getting fired midseason at least seemed to have positive effects at times.

hard to picture either working in a more sedentary game like baseball, though.

Steinbrenner alone may have provided a large enough sample size, however, for some tentative observations.

cards continue their sleepwalk to the end of the season, dropping the first game of the doubleheader 3-0 while getting exactly one baserunner to second.

i'm sure they're gassed, so i'm philosophical about this.

now they're up 3-0 in the second game, but that's not much of a lead against the brewers ...

I'm getting really tired of starters getting pulled at 2 and a third. It's not the worst thing about 2020, but it's climbing the list pretty steadily.

Phils bullpen imploded, 3 runs in 3 1/3. This is the eighth time they’ve blown a 3 run lead.

Edit: please excuse my fraction arithmetic. That’s 3 runs in 3 2/3.

Marlins 3-3 late vs Yankees, clinch a playoff spot if they win

Dylan Carlson, since re-joining the Cardinals after two weeks at the alternate site, or whatever they call it, is looking like the player they were hoping he'd be.

Through 9/5 (23 games, 79 PA): .162/.215/.243
Since 9/18 recall (10 games, 32 PA): .357/.375/.786, with seven extra-base hits

Games lost after leading by 3+ runs, NL East:

Phillies 8
Braves 1
Marlins 1
Mets 2
Nationals 4

So Phillies 8, all other NL East teams combined 8

well, we can put an early bow on this postseason

the Marlins have never won a division title - nor lost a postseason series

and count the 2 ringzzz

(Mets can be eliminated tonight after all)

Anthony DiComo
The Marlins clinch a playoff berth, taking the No. 2 NL East seed off the board as a possibility for the Mets.

The Mets' only path to the postseason now is to pass the Giants. And the tragic number there is 1.

"Giants are the gating item. Even if they lose all 3, Phillies, Brewers, Reds, and even Cardinals can potentially take the spot ahead of Mets"

Mets may get eliminated by a 3-run, go-ahead HR by all-time fan fave-turned-heel Giant Wil Flores....
   19. Howie Menckel Posted: September 26, 2020 at 12:55 AM (#5978887)
or not!

Flores HR gives Giants a 5-3 lead for a dude named Coonrad to save.

as the old saying goes, "he couldn't hit a bull in the ass with a handful of sand."

would have "walked the ballpark" if not for a couple of charity strikes and it's 1st and 2nd and Coonrad is behind again.

I think it's Giants announcers so maybe this is Krukow who I have heard good things about in the booth?

he speculates that as much as Coonrod has struggled, he "has to be careful not to serve up a cookie" to get a strike.

then - cookie served to Grisham, Padres win 6-5.

Giants PBP guy doesn't realize right away that while it's the 7th, it's the back end of a doubleheader so the game is over.

I believe all this is left now for the Mets to claim their rightful postseason berth is for them to win 3, and the Giants, Reds, Brewers, and Phillies to lose 2.

or something like that

what could go wrong on a "11-team parlay?"
