Former Cardinals coach Rich Hacker, a New Athens product like Whitey Herzog, dies at 72

Former major league infielder Rich Hacker, a New Athens, Ill., product who coached for New Athens native Whitey Herzog’s Cardinals teams from 1986-90 and then for two World Series champion Toronto teams when he was there from 1991-93, died late Wednesday night in Fairview Heights, Ill.

Hacker, 72 and suffering from complications from cancer, had been in hospice care.

“The big thing about Rich Hacker was that he was baseball through and through,” Herzog said Thursday. “He was one of the hardest workers I’ve ever, ever seen.

Rich Hacker? What did he do, steal some Bitcoins?

I dunno, but I've heard it speculated he was an important employment reference for Chris Correa.

Just watched the 1993 World Series Carter walk off game on YouTube.

I remember Hacker stood out back then as a youngish looking coach who didn't have a big pot belly. That seemed unusual at the time. I did not remember reading the car accident mentioned in the article though.

RIP.

What a strange headline. I see they worked together, so I guess it makes some sense. Maybe someday we'll get "Bryce Harper, a Las Vegas product like Jenna Jameson, dies at 89."

As a matter of style it doesn't seem right to put somebody else's name next to the word "dies", comma notwithstanding.

Well, also, New Athens has a population of like 2,000, it's 30 miles from St. Louis, and this was in a St. Louis paper. In that context it makes sense.
