1. The Duke Posted: August 31, 2022 at 08:39 PM (#6093947)I was watching a spring training game in 1995 when the replacement players were being used. The Phillies had one guy (I think it was Chris James, but couldn't swear to it) playing third base for them. Lee Thomas (I think) was on the broadcast and when James was mentioned, Thomas says "Hey, remember when people thought he was going to be good?" The announcers just burst out laughing because they couldn't believe the GM would say that about his own player.
Michael Fedo wrote a very good book, One Shining Season, based on a series of interviews with players who had had one excellent season and then never matched it again. Lee Thomas talked about his year for the 1962 Angels, when he drove in 104 runs, made the All-Star Team, was named on some MVP ballots. Thomas didn't maintain his brief stardom, but was clearly a good player (blocked till expansion in the Yankees organization). The book is worth getting for its picture of Thomas and several other one-season phenoms.
